|azlegalthief||well i decided to go a different way now. I did pick up the column, shift linkage and brackets and a tf904 but decided to co with the 5.3l conversion with auto. pretty much picked this motor and tranny up for free... bought a roll over 02 tahoe 4x4 and scrap or sold the parts from that... cant beat that. lol now just have to go to novak for the rest of the parts.|

|Andy The YJ Guy||I need automatic column shift linkage really bad! Please help me out if you can|

|Sunshine24||cool! I love that novak site and they are very helpful. *not to hijack, but picked up an '86 comanche that I am going to run into the ground...once the engine/tranny, etc go...going to do a swap. Very good insight on that site and the guys there are very easy to chat with about what they'd recommend and what they've seen. hope it all works out for ya.|

|azlegalthief||well now I am looking at a tf904 or tf999 but I have a 5sp in it right now and with my knee it is getting harder for me to push clutch down and don't want to get rid of my jeep I love it. sorry for delayed response been working. not sure if I want to go with aw4 just because of the electronics, yes over drive would be nice but after looking through all the tech to convert to that I might not want to do that.|

Maybe. The way it was written with the "..." made it seem more like he was questioning why he wants an auto for offroad. I would guy most of these guys aren't really what you would call hardcore, or close, who think a manual is better offroad. A lot of my buddies have manuals and they are all jealous of me when we get offroad.
|05-09-2013 06:26 PM|
I didn't see that as bashing at all. I thought it was an honest question hence my honest response to him. Thanks for clarifying.
I see others weren't familiar with why an automatic is preferable in crawling as well. Maybe they haven't broken anything by not getting to the clutch in time?

Anything else you need me to point out or explain for you?
|05-09-2013 05:32 PM|
I can not see a single line in the entire thread where anyone is "bashing" the OP. Please elaborate.

|Sunshine24||just offering up opinions and links as he asked if "anyone had any ideas"...anyway, there's my ideas and some links. Good luck with whatever you choose to do.|

and here's some information on the TH350 conversion...

Blaine really likes the AW4, so that's funny.
I would suggest swapping to the 32RH like the TJs have, should be a bit easier.
Autos are better for crawling - torque converter does everything from, you guessed to, converting torque, to absorbing impact, strain since it is hydraulic, to allowing controlled rearward descents will in gear. No fulling around with the clutch, no stalling, etc.
I say we quit bashing the OPs preference and help him do what he wants, not give him our opinions on if he should do the swap or not. His money, his choice.

|Sunshine24||on a side note, what tranny, transfer case, etc do you have in there now? might be interested in picking the extra's up from ya when/if you do decide to do the conversion|
|05-09-2013 02:52 PM|
why an aw4? auto's aren't easier to crawl with - gearing helps crawling (cheaper than converting)..a manual with decent gearing...stick it in first and let it crawl for you. imo here's a bit of information on that AW4. Not the best to be converting to.
The AW4 is a light to medium-duty transmission. Ours, our callers' and customers' experiences with the AW4 are less than stellar. They have a tendency to generate excessive amounts of heat, and are known for unnecessarily consuming more engine power than some other automatics. The shift points in the AW4 feel odd, and the spotty engagment of the lockup torque converter is idiosyncratic.

|CoreyZ||I agree with nvmytj's list and recommendations. For that age, you can find a comparable jeep with an auto in it for less than the conversion would end up running you.|
|05-09-2013 02:42 AM|
Automatic is easier to crawl with because of the torque converter slip. Old knees like automatics too.
Add to the list.... radiator or transmission cooler.

|Jared66||Why would you go from a standard to an auto....|
|05-09-2013 02:22 AM|
It's not an extremely difficult job but a cost prohibitive because you will need a steering column, transmission w/bolts, torque converter, flywheel both driveshafts and the brake pedal. I've never heard of a Th350 bolted up to a 4.0
I don't recall what operates the kick down on the transmission either.
If you had a donor vehicle it would be a lot easier. I'd sooner work a month for free than ever have to deal with the knobshines at Jeeps Unlimited for even a spark plug.
Personally I would sell and buy a jeep with an auto if it's that important.

|azlegalthief||And it's a 95 yj with inline 6. Sorry about not posting that|

|azlegalthief||My skill level is great it's just the time to do it and gather the parts.|

I will say... any time someone thinks about swapping out drivetrains, I have to ask... What is your skill level or are you having a shop do it?
Its not an easy thing now that vehicles are mostly computer controlled. Back in the days when the ECU didnt run everything in the vehicle, it wasnt as hard but was still a big undertaking. Now its just bat-sh$$ crazy.
