foxyjeeper I'm jealous. I was trying to make a family trip to OBX but decided that is was too far to travel with wife and 3 kids (9 hours without including potty stops) and settled for the Jersey Shore. - Not the part where they film the show. After reading this thread and seeing your pictures, I'm setting it downed as a must do for next summer. Always good to have something to look forward to.

cleanup? someone recommended air compressor first then wash/vacuum. i found this not to work very well. the air compressor was great but only for a few minor areas.

wipe EVERYTHING down first and knock down/swipe all sand you find. then get to vacuuming and be prepared to vacuum for a while. i spent 4 hours cleaning my jeep up when i got back from doors off top off all week and there was still sand it in.

exterior: sprinkler under the jeep and then normal wash while focusing on crevices where sand built up. sand cleans up easier than virginia red clay so thats good.

also, side note, driving on the sand cleans your tires! mine were so red and stained in the grooves and on the tread. nice bonus.

CooperM Any thoughts on clean up after? Any mechanical stuff in particular to pay attention to like brake pads, etc?

lysol The wife and I took her Grand Cherokee to OBX a couple months ago. I typed up a thread on it with links to a GOOGLE EARTH map:

I specifically brought a recovery strap and a cigarrete lighter air compressor, but didn't have to use either. I brought other tools and junk, but the 2 above were the most important to me. There was free air right at the entrance to the beach.

Yep, had to do this twice so far. However, I'm proud to say that I have zero signs of sand in my Jeep now. I always bring it back to showroom condition after offroading. I'm very meticulous getting every crack and crevice. Air compressor helps, just use it first since it blows sand everywhere, but it gets cracks around shifter, etc nice and clean.

Regarding comment on Auto, I love my auto trans. The wet soupy stuff really grabs and sucks jeep in, I like being able to just gas it and get my speed back up.

SBL I was surf fishing this weekend in very soft sand. a few pointers:

if it is windy and you have the doors off EVERYTHING will get covered by sand as well as every crack and crevice will fill with sand
Wheel spin is bad. start slow, get your momentum up and keep it up.
If you air your tires down you should have no problems.
If it is hot and sunny one of the pop up canopy tents is a recommended
Hitch mounted rack for cooler and supplies keeps a lot of sand out of the jeep

RedSectorA Looking forward to the pics. In regards to the Spiderweb, try putting a tie down in the center and one to each side. I don't have to remove any of the ties when opening the soft top.

first off, the aw110 performed extremely well suction cupped to the hood of the vehicle and took great, smooth video. its also water proof and takes great pictures above and below water. really impressed for the money.

holy crap this thing was so handy! my vehicle stayed very cool with the top down all week. i couldn't imagine not having one.

note: it sucks that you have to remove the 2 tie down balls up front to latch down your top. its obvious but for some reason i missed it.

straps
thankfully i never had to use them but the smittybuilt 3"x30' seems extremely well made.

beach driving
airing down was super key. i only dropped to 20 PSI because my jeep was used frequently for short trips on the road (3 miles or less) and i didn't want to keep going up and down. i know 15 or so is recommended. but it made a huge difference. i never needed 4low either and avoided pulling people out. i saw a raptor F150 fail to pull a stupid porsche cayenne out. i have to assume the ford driver had no idea what he was doing. but there were a lot of stuck people, pretty hilarious. but a solid week of top and doors off beach driving was amazing.

one thing i noticed, being in a 6 speed, i 'dribbled' the Jeep a bit in tough, deep areas. i had to focus on keeping the RPMs high when hitting rough areas and avoid riding the clutch. i can't imagine what you auto guys do in your jeeps except yawn at everything you drive through or over.

dalearyous i have a new camera coming today, nikon aw110. between that on phones i am set. will post back here.

ill look on the map and make some calls and see where i can find air.

onetraveller Don't bet on a gas station. Worse case, pick up a $20 Campbell Hausfield 12v compressor from Walmart. They are slow but they work.

Here's a better option.

the only consistently crucial thing listed here is an air compressor. the road i take to the house just dead ends at the beach and then i have to drive 5 miles through the beach/sand to the house. i don't think i will have a need to air back up until i leave. i am hoping there is a station close to where i get back on the road to air back up. hopefully that is sufficient.

Thorshammer7 All very good info. Heres a small tip, carry a gallon jug of water to rinse your feet/shoes for the trip home. The wife and I are at the beach most weedends.

Sltwrx Where we are on Cape Cod, I've never seen anyone get legitimately stuck- even people in Honda CRVs with those tiny tires get through the soft stuff and uphill sections as long as they are at 12-15 psi. The only people I've seen get stuck are those who forget to engage 4WD and those who don't air down.

That said, our town requires full size spare, shovel, jack, jack stand (12" x 12" plywood), tow rope, tire gauge, and 15psi max to enter the beach.

If you get stuck I would check your pressure and just air down a bit more.

PrecisionPowder rather than using floor mats for traction i recommend picking up some 1x8 or 1x10 pine boards about 2 feet long. grip tape on the top and some staggered triangle pieces of wood screwed/nailed to the bottom. (rip a 2x4 at a 45 degree angle and attach) bring at least 4. if you are stuck put those under the tires rather than your floor mats. no need to get those are dirty beat up and gross, especially in wet sand. these will be much much better for getting you out a trouble. they wont slide back and they will give you ample surface area. the grip tape will help you get going again. then at the end of the trip toss them in your fire pit and be done with them (unless you plan on going again then keep them).

BacaraJKU We went to the beach over Memorial Day and only had an issue one time. I turned on very soft/dry sand. Had to back up about 6 times to get going. Stopping is no issue, just remember if you slam brakes on you will stop fast, but also have a bunch of sand in front of tires.

We went to Mexico and one part of the beach we had to cross when the tide was down. It was a section of a bunch of wet sand and tons of crushed shells. Be very careful here, you will hit areas that just sink in and your done. We kept our speed up around 25-35 and made it through the sinkhole sections, but left very deep ruts.

My advice is try to stay out of wet sand. So anywhere that is underwater when tide is up is bad. Keep speed up in these areas.

Honestly I kept it in 2wd unless I was driving in super soft sand or the crushed shell area.

here. One other question... everyone's mentioning momentum. What about stopping and
parking somewhere for the day on the beach? Stay on the firmer sand or start there and
back up slowly into the looser stuff to get out of the way?

If you are being pulled out, don't floor it. Let the pulling truck get you going. Give it very light gas until you get moving. Just enough to barely get going. I see so many people floor it and dig themselves right back in.

Regarding traction control. I took my sport into some deep soft sand this weekend and didn't even think about turning it off. I had zero issues, but then again I didn't hit any big hills here you really need to lay into it. Just put it in 4hi and went. Only aired down to 25psi so I could hit the main road back to gas station.

I'll be doing some good dune/beach driving over memorial day weekend in Mexico, so curious to see how jeep behaves for an extended time in sand with more varying conditions.

Edit: Unless someone was really stuck, I would rather dig them out since I'm no expert in extractions. I would hate to damage my jeep or their vehicle. As others have said, use a quality tow rope without metal hooks.

dalearyous one last thing i want to touch on,

if i get stuck, or have to rescue someone stuck, what is the best/safest way to do it? put the stuck vehicle in neutral running or off? have the stuck vehicle lightly gas it too?

only if you bury it. my wife's twin buried her 2012 sport and in 4low it crawled right out.

Not completely.

And 4H and 4L treat ESC a little differently. That's why I say to hold down the ESC button after you get into 4H. Get it all the way off.

TheyCallMeSnow People have mentioned it a lot, air down the tires, recovery, and recovery points. Maybe a hand held cb just incase if both of you guys get stuck and can't get out. Extra gas is always good (Jerry cans) air compresser, shovel(s), fishing gear, the hottie which you already have, and a load of sunscreen. Don't forget a jack and something you can put under the jack so the jack doesn't sink into the sand. Something big with a large surface area and that also has a flat surface. So maybe like a cynderblock?
