vtwin-racing Like a couple others, just get slight marble noise in 3rd when accelerating..
1700 miles now, started @ 1k. Not worried about it yet, shifts smooth..

bimmergirl New throw-out bearing and clutch for me this past week. I had the marbles in a can noise and a thunk/clunk when shifting and now it's gone. Not sure how long it will last though.

keda69 Only have my jeep for a week now, but have over 500 miles on it already. I have driven trucks and sports cars with manuals, and the jeep is definitely like a truck. So if you come from a low clutch grab, and the short shift of a car. The high clutch, long shift, and unrefined feel of the jeep trans will feel "weird" ,but it is perfectly normal for a truck trans. My two cents worth.

I don't have that particular issue. However, maybe I will with the new transmission. Wait and see, I guess.

My 2013 does and my 2012 did also

My 2013 does and my 2012 did also, in fact I traded the 2012 in for the 2013 because I thought there was something wrong with the transmission after taking it back to the dealer 3 times for the rattling. Both only rattle while idling with the clutch out. If I engage the clutch the rattling stops. I don't experience any other strange noises otherwise. So I'm assuming it's common, that doesn't mean I like it though . Hope this helps!

Gord P Just got off the phone with the adviser.... I'm going to have this Ford Escape for a few more days. I'm getting a new transmission. He said that when they opened it up, they found enough wear that they believed it wouldn't be worth the labour and they were able to get authorization for the new unit. I've only put about 3200 miles on it myself since October and I've been easy on it. I suppose, in the long term, going forward with a new transmission is far better than having a repaired original.

Gord P Mine is a consistent marbles in a can sound in 3rd and 4th once it's warmed up. So, I'm choosing to be optimistic that, based on the shop foreman's confidence in knowing what was happening, the problem will be resolved and all will be right with the world.

I'm almost positive my rattle is coming from the outside somewhere in or near the transmission. Unfortunately, it's intermittent, I can hear it one minute and wait a few seconds and it might go away or it might continue for awhile. If I move the jeep, it may go away. It's one reason why I think it could be something rattling against each other, I just can't track it down. The rubber hammer is a good idea, I may give that a try.

Have you checked under the console, make sure the inner rubber boot is secure.. check the linkage.. basically make sure everything under the console is secure? I've had good luck with rattles in the past by getting under the vehicle with a rubber hammer and giving everything a good whack (less whack on things that can't handle it of course) that'll often turn up loose heat shields.

What's interesting is my rattle started very closely after I had my transmission pulled to replace a leaking rear main seal. Of course, I'd have a hard time proving the dealer was responsible when they did that work, but I've wondered if something didn't get shifted around that's now causing the rattle. I have checked heat shields and looked for anything obvious that might be rattling.

I'll probably eventually take it in, but the thought of tearing my transmission apart to chase down the rattle doesn't thrill me. Especially reading that a new or rebuilt transmission doesn't always solve the problem. I'm waiting to see if it gets any worse, but there's no change after 3 months.

mhicanders Indeed, makes me a bit concerned.. However so far I haven't heard anything about complete failures and some people found loose items under the console (x-fer case cable, rubber boot and the like) causing noises that could explain this.

Several people have had parts and entire transmissions replaced and the noise changes (now it's 3-4 at x rpms or the like) or the noise goes away for a little while. Gord P I'm really hoping that this annoyance is resolved. I didn't spend that much money to drive something that sounds like crap.

Gord P Had the shop foreman try my 2012 JKU early Saturday morning to check out the marbles in a can sound in 3rd and 4th when the engine is warm. He's confident that he knows what the problem is... I won't embarrass myself by trying to repeat what he said. He did say that he notices the sound goes away when pressing up on the stick in 3rd and down while in 4th. I dropped it off yesterday and I should have it back in a couple days.

I will report back on what they did and the results for those who are experiencing the same issue.

Wranglerjoe79 I bought a 2013 new in May. Right now it is at 8500 miles. I noticed that I have a rattle in my shifter when in 2nd gear. It sounds like loose change in my cup holder in the console. I actually noticed this probably 5500 miles ago. I never had time to go to the dealer to get it checked out. I was hoping it would go away. But it has not. If I press harder on the shifter leaver, it goes away. It's more of a vibration rattling sound. I don't know what it is. I'm kinda dreading taking it to the dealer, cause I suspect they'll tell me "it's normal" which would piss me off even more. I also noticed the rattling sound from underneath the jeep. If I press the clutch a little bit, it goes away. I don't know if this only happens when the jeep is warm? To me it sounds like a linkage rattling sound. But I don't know. I only hear when I am actually looking for it. Otherwise I kinda tune it out. Ugh.

keda69 Damn and to think I ordered a manual ,because they usually have less problems then an auto! I haven't even picked my jeep up yet and I'm worried!

I read this entire thread before I made my purchase, and again this morning. And, I think your assessment is basically correct. Still, disappointing. Just not yet sure what I want to do about it. The warranty gives me peace of mind atm, and if I do nothing and the noise persists for 5 years without breakage, then I suppose it will not break on day 1 of year 6. Still though, not sure what I want to do.

On some level, this is not dissimilar from some of the trials and tribulations I have had with my 2000 Harley FXST. And that machine was/is not the smoothest/quiet beast by any means.

Mines not getting better, nor worse. I think its just one of those live with it things, I haven't seen any definitive fixes, and it seems to be extremely common. I noticed its better when cold, which makes me think the gear oil used might be too thin when warm, but who knows.

i had to join the site after reading this thread

I too have the neutral rolling rattle (roll over noise) in tranny , and the grunt at low rpm in neutral around 2000 rpm I think. Its clearly the same noise as some of you have and the shaking shifter shake as your accelerating . I even feel a shudder round 40 mph at steady speed but its def. related I feel .Ive been tracking it down for two years + thinkin it is tranny mount maybe. Some one told me its bad transfer case balancer . But I don't know. I even got new front drive shaft drive . no fix


same exact thing as Blastek has. Just like listening to my jeep by hearing his video

my tranny was pulled at 3000 miles due to bad syncro and fork also
but the roll over noise has been bugging the hell out of me for over 2 years !

The rattling still continued after a new transmission and throw out bearings as well. So I finally wrote to BBB after not hearing from Chrysler for over a month despite my constant calls. Within 2 hrs of writing to the BBB I received a phone call offering to buy back my vehicle. Ill be getting back all the payments ive made, as well as my down payment in a check. As well as my loan paid off. I will be purchasing the 2014 Jeep Wrangler Unlimited Willy's Wheeler in an automatic. Mine is the same, it downshifts from 3rd to 2nd much smoother than up shifting from 1st to 2nd.

ocd_dave Its almost the sound I would hear from a Diesel engine(marble or rubbing sound), but its coming from the tranny in 3rd and 4th gear. I'm guessing its just gear noise, but who knows, moving the 4x4 lever does nothing to quiet it down.

relyt A throw out bearing chirps when the clutch pedal is out and the clutch is engaged. When you press the pedal to disengage the clutch is when a bad throw out bearing stops making noise.
