Definitely should be on every SoCal wheeler's bucket list IMO.
You might not want to wait until it gets TOO cold though. I went in November a few years ago. I don't remember what the temperature was at night but it was pretty cold and VERY windy. I've snow camped so I was prepared for the cold, but others weren't and had to get in the Jeep at night with the engine running and heat on to stay warm, and then bailed after the first night.

|JoeBot13||On the bucket list before I leave California ... gonna have to wait until the winter though ... we've already broke 110 a couple times out that way this year ... gonna be a hot summer|

Bring extra gas as well.
I needed it when I was out there a couple months ago.
Also make sure someone has this book too.
Very useful and a requirement for this trip.

|Big Vic||Well thanks for all the info guys, Yomondo thanks for the heads up, I'm starting to re-think the date to maybe later in the year when its cooler.|

States "Special use permits are also required for all groups of at least 7 vehicles or 15 participants for common recreational activities".
Normal driver liability insurance that we all already have satisfies the permit's liability insurance requirement.

|Randog||If I’m reading the requirements correctly, Special use permits are required for larger commercial groups. Issued permits require liability insurance too which probably isn't going to happen either for this type of outing. This requirement would be required for special events such as the Barstow to Vegas race. I don't think it would apply to a bunch of friends out for the weekend. But I could be wrong…|

And speaking of firearms, be aware that while you're allowed to carry firearms in the Mojave National Preserve in accordance with federal, state and local laws, you are only allowed to shoot them while legally hunting in accordance with DFG regulations (despite the existence of spent shells and casings, and clay target fragments, and bullet holes in places, that may suggest otherwise).

Like others said, it's going to be HOT out there in June. Bring extra water and extra coolant and other fluids for the Jeep. Last two times I was there, someone in the group had battery issues, so if you have an extra battery available to carry, bring that too.
Be aware that if your group consists of more than 6 vehicles or 14 people, you need to have a Special Use Permit which costs $69 and takes 2-4 weeks for processing. Don't believe their website that says to allow 3-4 business days (or something like that) for processing. Last time it took 3-1/2 weeks to process.
If you plan on visiting the Lava Tube, I recommend getting there between 11am and 2pm when the sun is high in the sky and all the beams of light are shining down onto the ground.
Here's another little teaser pic, taken less than 3 weeks ago at my favorite vista along Death Valley Mine Road. (Temps were already in the 90's at that time.)
And another one taken on Soda Lake dry lake bed.
And if you're fortunate enough to have clear, moonless skies at night, enjoy the millions of stars.

Bring tons of water. It's going to be VERY hot.
BMW of Ventura just lost a rider to the heat that participated in one of their rides recently to Mojave Road.

Journey to Mojave Road a camping Adventure June 7, 8, and 9th
Okay I have been wanting to do this trip for sometime now. I have been checking the forum to see if anyone had planned this event and decided to set this up myself. If you enjoy camping and scenic drives with lots of history then this is a run for you.
Tow points front and rear
some ground clearance
AT or MT tires
Everyone brings a tow strap or rope.
Please bring firewood.
The trail is easy but there are areas of sand and mud where getting stuck is a possibility.
I would like to run the trail from east to west starting from Nevada/ Arizona border by Needles, to Barstow. This is a 138 mile journey. with short detours along the way for sight seeing.
I will post more details on where to meet, caravan options and so on as soon as I see some interest from you. The more the merrier for these trips but would like to see at least two other jeeps join in.
