Everything you said was spot on...... But I still love my TJ!!!

Dare after having cj's for years the LJ is my first TJ model after driving several first and I Love it. Dogs love the extra space also, only draw back...hard top is harder to find and costs more all other items are correct, better towing, ride, 44 rear, I6 etc.

Larger turning radius = harder to maneuver on tight trails or the mall parking lot I'm not sure if someone has mentioned it, but higher towing capacity. (I think)

Like that picture above shows there is a lot more extra room. I wasn't aware that it can be lifted up to 4" with out an sye, I'm going to have to get a bigger lift now!! Lol. I go camping ever year and I went once since I've owned and can't wait to go again, all the added room makes it easy to store stuff. Hope my opinion helps! Here's a pic,

That's an kinda older pic. I have a diy stinger on it now.

This is true. Should've said that he "said" he had an LJ with a 4 banger. I asked him to post pics of it because I was highly skeptical. He never did...

PStov98TJ Yep. LJ is heavier. But just order the LJ specific springs and you'll be ok. And as Unlimited said, all LJ's have 4.0's. There is one guy on here that had a 2.5L LJ but he said it was a special order. Don't know how he swung that one but it's definitely not a common thing.

MarkGLHS one tech aspect not mentioned: the LJ is heavier than the TJ (obviously).

With regards, to TJ vs. LJ, there are lots of threads here and on other boards. (Google is your friend)
I am going to keep my 99 TJ. I just wish that I would have known the LG was bigger before I bought my TJ because I may have considered spending a little more money on an LJ if I would have known it was bigger prior to the purchase of my TJ . I have a daughter with special needs, so having a little more storage and rear passenger leg room would come in handy.

I am currently considering selling my dd and getting another Jeep that I can have as a dd and keep my TJ for playing. I am leaning toward the LJ because of size. Also would be nice to have another 4x4 for my wife to be able to get around in the winter while she's hauling our daughter to day care. At least that's the excuse I am trying to pass off to her .

lynn After 16 years wheelin and camping out of a '71 CJ5, when I decided to get a newer rig there was only one on my list: an LJ.

Bought a lightly used '05 LJ with 10K miles on it in May 2007, for $17,900.

Six years later, I still love it.

SuperTJ The LJ was the only Wrangler I was looking for my latest Jeep. I had an 04 TJ. I had to do all kinds of things to make it work for me. Saddle bags, Rear Rack etc. So this time I wanted more room but I didn't want an 07-2013. I had a 2010 and was not happy with it.

Bielzebub Yeah, I wish I would have known that before I bought my TJ! I would have looked for an LJ! Le sigh....

UnlimitedLJ04 LJ is 15" longer on the body.
10" more wheelbase.
2" more leg room in the rear passenger area.
basically everything forward of the drivers side is the same.

05-08-2013 08:06 AM
TJDave Longer wheelbase usually means better handling, especially in snowy on-road conditions.

Significantly more towing capacity due to the longer WB also.

I wish I would of bought an LJ when I was shopping for Jeeps. They just were very hard to find, and a lot more expensive than SWB TJ's of the same year.
I guess you could count that as one of the very few negatives.
05-08-2013 07:58 AM
Bielzebub What do you mean by road manners? Better highway handling?
05-08-2013 07:52 AM
Herviss I only just got my LJ, and never owned a TJ, but while searching for my Jeep the biggest difference I saw between the 2 is the space in the backseat and behind the backseat. If you have kids that you might want to put in the backseat, I would suggest the LJ because you can bring the kids and put a cooler or groceries in the back without upsetting or damaging either.

And I also thought the LJ had better road manners then the TJ, I drove several stock TJs and one stock LJ and that seemed the case to me.
05-08-2013 07:46 AM
Bielzebub Same motor? Any motor to stay away from? I thought I read something a few days ago about a different engine in the LJ. Maybe I was dreaming about that...
05-08-2013 07:37 AM
PStov98TJ The major difference is the wheelbase. Other than that, not much is different between a TJ and LJ.

Obviously there's advantages and disadvantages to a longer wheelbase. One of the advantages though is that I can be lifted 4" without the need of an sye/cv shaft due to its longer rear shaft.

TJ and LJ Differences

Ok, this isn't a thread to start bashing either style or going on a tangent of which one is better and which one can scale Mt Everest and which one can't, but can anyone tell me the MAJOR differences between the TJ and the LJ? I currently have a 99 TJ and I absolutely love it! I am considering of selling my current daily driver and purchasing another Jeep as a daily driver. I like the TJ a lot, but thinking of something a little newer. I don't really want to go with a JK just because of price and difficulty of SOME (not all) of the mods that I am wanting. Are there any problems with the LJ that were prevalent that could steer a person's decision one way or another? Anyway, Just looking for information, no rants or arguments, please!
