My son used the same rack for his and wanted his a little longer to set on top of some speaker boxes he built so he left the 2" section in the center in place and just cut off the part that stuck out. I think he plugged it with some kind of square plastic cap....probably one of those receiver plugs.

I try to keep as much of the heavy stuff as I can (tools, parts, etc) sitting down in the tub to keep the center of gravity lower.

|Lakeman1||All of these look great but you need a barrier on the front side. Anything heavy in a panic stop would come to the front with you.|

|Bravo.Justin||Great idea waterdog. When I get time, I have an idea to raise it on a relatively "quick" release type suspension system. I have a roof rack now so it's not as big of a deal, but I need to be able to fit a full size Rottweiler underneath the basket.|

Instead of bolting the rack to the cross bars that run between the sports bar secure the rack to the cross bars with a clevis & hairpin cotter pin

|bryanskwirut||Just finished mine. Exact same set up as OP. Got the materials and put it all together in under 4 hours. This is such a good idea.|

I stole Water Dog's idea, and it worked great.
What I have is a cargo rack, built by a local Jeeper, that fits over the spare tire. I modified it with some supports and Qwik-Fist clamps to hold a shovel and ax. Unfortunately, even with an aftermarket carrier, it bounced around too much on the rougher trails. I even bought a smaller low profile cooler, but was no help.
I also didn't like how far it stuck out the back.
So.... I moved it. I used thick gauge steel square stock. Two existing hard top bolt holes, two new holes, and 4 factory hard top fasteners. Then bolted the rack on with stainless bolts and lock nuts.
Now I can carry a regular size cooler, and don't loose any cargo space. It is very solid.
It can also be easily removed, and the tire hoop slid back on for top-on smooth snow wheelin' season.
Thanks Water Dog for the great idea.

|OkieOutlaw||Thanks. That is an awesome idea except now I have to buy two of the dang things. LOL.|

|Bravo.Justin||Has anyone fastened this to the roll bars with the foam and padding on? Trying to think of a way to support the weight without cutting into the foam. A quicker install system would also be a plus..|

|Water Dog||FWIW...Picked up a little Igloo Marine Ice Chest the other day at Wallymart that is a perfect fit for the storage rack....in case anyone is interested.|

Great idea. Thanks for sharing it. I will have to measure to see if it will fit in the back of my LJ with the rear seat in. I have to take the grand kids on the trail with me and need the rear seat, but need all the room I can get
Thanks again everybody for the idea and the different installation options.

|Nothing but a jeep thing||I know it was mentioned above but has anyone thought on how this would work on a soft top?? Greatest idea ever.|

|PBJ Georgia||Awesome idea! I think I am going to try and build the hangers in from the top and cross brace onto the back crossbar (kinda like bestop) in order to keep the soft top clearance but I never would have thought of this. Thanks for Sharing!|

|Water Dog||BTW, when I assembled my basket, I didn't cut off the ends of the cross tie pieces that the op did. I just recentered the pieces and used the existing holes in the ends to drill new holes in the basket border piece.|

|Neal5280||Sold this is a great idea. Probably going to get my basket tomorrow!|

|PitViper||Thats a great idea. Its got me thinking of picking maybe 3 up and use the for cargo racks up top. Beats paying 300-500 for a larger basket on top of the 300-500 for the mounting rails.|
