|Billmummey||Yup it's an 87.... My friend was thinking my old starter had a bad bendix and was coming out after it started spinning and messed up the flywheel but I did t see and evidence of a bad flywheel, just a little wear on the corner of the teeth|

|roadyrob||what year jeep? the 87 uses the ford starter used on cj's. the 88 and up uses the style with the solenoid on the starter. the 87 is known for noisy starters, mainly because there are few starters that will work but only one correct one. mine has been noisy for years, 3 different starters, all noisy until the 4th one, finally people don't turn and look when I start it. I compared it to the old one and the end where the drives at is about 3/8" shorter on the quiet one. all I can tell you is keep trying different ones till you get lucky like I did.|

Loud starter issues
So I just got this jeep a few weeks ago and the starter is loud and don't sound right when it's engaged and sometimes the bendix don't kick so I assumed it was just a bad starter, put a new one in today and it still makes the same loud noise when engaged??? Do these 4.2 starters need shims??
