MudFly has the right approach...

While the electrical tape method might temporarily correct the issue, it will eventually wear out and you'll be faced with the same (if not worse) problem. The answer is, as MudFly attempted, is to adjust the plastic tailgate guides. In his case, he only had to adjust the frame guide up 1/8 inch. You may also have to tighten, or adjust, the corresponding pastic guide on the tailgate door itself. I know it's a pain, but a little trial and effort may be necessary.

robbiesixXxer Just loosen them.

I have a stock 2012 JKU with 6,000 mles. The rattle seemed to be coming from the tailgate area when driving. I took the spare tire off and made sure all nuts and bolts on tailgate were tight. I put the spare back on..rattle still there. Next I looked at the latch hardware on the body. It looked like the latch on the tailgate was riding on the silver catch on the body. I thought that this could possibly be causing the rattle. I adjusted the "Lower Guide" (black plastic with 2 regular bolts, not the upper silver catch with torx bolts) UP just about an 1/8th inch. This piece is adjustable up/down and fore/aft. I only adjusted it up. Been driving now for a few days with no rattle. Just something to add to your possible rattle fixes.
Thanks mine started rattling last weekend...easy fix.

If the electrical tape works, try coating the same area as you did with some 5 minute clear epoxy. It will be a more permanent fix. It stays flexible like electrical tape but won't flake off. If you need to take it off, it will slice off with a box cutter.

cvomike I have the same rattle in the tailgate and left rear door I fixed the tailgate by removing the acess panel and placeing a bead of silicone on all the support cross members it worked.. as for the door 3 trips to two dealers and they are clueless ,filed a complant 2 mounths ago with Jeep have not heard from them... I think the dealers and Jeep don't give a s$It .....

robbiesixXxer Thanks Mudfly! Your post helped me fix my annoying rattle. Was definitely getting too much "play" in the gate door. I adjusted the "Lower Guide" and put a small piece of duct tape on the latch for good measure. Good as new. Hell yeah.

twalton same as mudfly. rattle from swinggate. put electrical tape on latch and guide, rattle gone. thanks mudfly for the tip about adjusting the guide. i may try that if the tape wears out.

pdubois64 I had this rattle on my 09. IIRC the steelership fixed it, may have been a TSB on it. It was the rear side door latch, sounded like someone tapping a pen on metal.

Tailgate rattle fixed!

I had this rattle pop up a few days ago. Perfect one day and an annoying rattle from the tailgate area the next. Read through some of the solutions in this thread, but did some troubleshooting on my own.

Kaisoboy Had this rattle on my 2011.

Take a look at the picture above posted by kjeeper. Loosen the two bolts holding the striker (The striker adjusts back and forth, up and down). Dont loosen to much, just enough to be able to move the striker. Move the striker towards the seat 1/8" taking care NOT to move it up or down but just backwards. Then re-tighten the bolts and test the door. The door will need slightly more effort to close but not much over the stock adjustment.

Rattle is now gone.

Doc3613 Yep, mine was the door. Little lube and good to go

2DEUCE2 Usually when I start to get a rattle over bumps, it is one of my two hardtop hold down cap bolts in the sound bar that is coming loose. I have to tighten those up every couple of months or so. That only applies if you have the hard top though.

Please let me know waht the dealer finds out. I have the same thing on my 09. I have tried to find a loose bolt or something but every thing is tight. I put a wrench on every bolt that I could and not a single one was loose.

themoneypit if you have an oversized spare on the factory mount sometime that will rattle the gate, also my 07 had a wire in the tailgate door that would bounce around and hit the inside of the gate.

ShaunWV Do you have anything in the storage area built into the floor in the rear cargo area? Also, make sure the jack is not loose and rattling around.

Yep... Google door striker mod (or fix)
Or latch... Forget

Some use electrical tape and works fine. You will see
