Nope flagpole is open year round 24 hours a day. Great places to camp up there as well!

Motor vehicle use map for george washington national forest. Its good to have a copy on the trail that way if a ranget stops you, you can pull it out and show him that your trying to follow the traip on the map. I believe flagpole is on map 9.

Price is free, trail times vary depending on how often you stop. I think from start to finish if you don't stop at all you can do i t in 2 hours. I do highly recommend you have a second high clearance vehicle with you.

Directions are from i81:
Take rt 33 west
Turn left on clover hill rd.
Make a right on union springs rd.
You will come to a stop sign make a left (staying on union spring).
You will be coming down a hill that will be going left, make a right at the bottom of that hill. (Staying on union spring)
Follow union spring, it will eventually turn to gravel then dirt.
When you come to a spot with a steep dirt hill on your left, that is the start of the trail. Great plave to airdown. (Do not go on the dirt hill, forest rangers will write a hefty ticket.)
There are two ways off the trail one is to follow the trail past flagpole knob and the other is a right turn before flagpole that will take you down to switzer dam right off 33.
I recommend at minimum you downlad or print the mvum for gwnf.
With that being said please note that anything off the main trail is off limits. If you get caught of the main trail forest rangers will fine you and possibly ban you from george washinton national forest.

Have fun and safe wheelin!

Flagpole knob is great! There is only one maybe two (if you choose to do) technical sections. Also great views from meadow knob and flagpole knob. There are also a few others that are around but I havent been on them.
