st1264 Wings make the Playoffs for the 23rd straight year!!!

From Yahoo Sports:

The Detroit Red Wings earned a point against the Pittsburgh Penguins on Wednesday, rallying with a Riley Sheahan goal to send the game to overtime before losing in a shootout, 4-3.
Your first reaction might be, “Hey, who’s Riley Sheahan?”, and that’s sort of the point: The Red Wings clinched their 23rd straight postseason berth with guys like Sheahan playing upwards of 40 games, scoring 23 points on the year, after playing in the AHL last season.
This was a team that had Coach Mike Babcock staring at a white board in his office for most of the season, trying to figure out which kid was going to replace which injured veteran on any given night.
This was a team that fought its way into a postseason spot and maintained it without having Pavel Datsyuk or Henrik Zetterberg on the ice for the whole of March.
This was a team that, even without the injuries, had a sizable collection of recent Grand Rapids graduates filling out the roster.
This was this year the historic streak was supposed to die. And it didn’t. There probably aren’t enough accolades you can throw at Babcock for the job he did coaching this team through adversity this season.

The longest active playoff streak in pro sports lives on.

vetteonr That's a great win for team that's really getting on a roll. When they start to get their stars back (Datsyuk will be back for the next game) they could make a long run in the playoffs. They're getting hot at the right time, just like LA did a few years ago.

st1264 Nyquist beats Chara like a rented mule... . He is an emerging star of the future. Red Wings are getting hot right now, all their young guys are playing great hockey with star players injured (Datsyuk, Zetterberg and Alfredsson).

RoadiJeff I don't usually (ever?) root for the Wings but thank you for that come-from-behind win against Boston tonight.

WranglerWarrior I have to agree, I would like to see some rosters shaken up come offseason. And I really think that we need more "fight night at the joe", there has been too much abuse dishes out to our stars like PAV, And Z and no retaliation. Case and point why they got hurt.

One just has to go over their last boxscore to see why they are losing. If you read who skated last night, you'll see why they lost. Alfredsson, Bertuzzi, Cleary, Samuelsson, Franzen are all painfully slow skaters. Read the other names - Huge lack of depth here... Helm is always hurt & Z is out with nobody to replace them. Any game going to a Shootout will be a sure loss.

Add in an unskilled defense and you have a recipe for disaster. I'm sure when Zetterberg and Helm come back they'll do better, but when you can't score goals and allow a bunch you are going to lose. They had only 18 SOG last night.

I heard rumors of Babcock getting fired last year when it was doubtful they'd make the playoffs, but he may very well get fired this year. I have been a Red Wings fan for many years, but I think this team is mediocre at best. Hope they make some trades and/or clean house in the off season.

Talent is there IMO but a lack of execution

Injuries, causing the team moral to be crap. I actually expect the classic to boost moral and start a little win streak. Gus is doing great in goal but he really needs help in the scoring dept, Dasyuk can't do it alone mule, Tatar and helmer was helping till he got hurt. I still have all the confidence in the world for my wings but man they gotta step it up. I am really looking forward to seeing Tomas Jurco with nyquist and Tatar aka speed line.

RoadiJeff Congrats on finally winning one last night. Has the ship righted itself?

RoadiJeff I'd almost feel sorry for any team that's going through a 7-game (and counting) tailspin...if it was any team other than Detroit.

Try not being a hater for a few seconds... I could care less how your team(s) are doing Make sure to reply and look petty

Wings have no 3rd or 4th line and a young, weak defense. They are struggling, just as I predicted earlier. Haven't caught many games but have seen a ton of OTL on my ESPN app. It's still early, but 22 consecutive years of making the playoffs is in jeopardy.

RoadiJeff A 3-game streak has now turned into a SIX game losing streak - whoa bus!
11-11-2013 03:15 AM
RoadiJeff Well, they're on a streak, although a 3-game losing streak probably isn't anything to be happy about for anyone who is a Motor City hockey boys fan.

It looks like they're still high in the rankings but then again they've played 2-3 more games than many of the other teams.

WranglerWarrior Yep not a bad start at all. Happy that we don't play the coyotes again this season aside from a possible playoff trip. Glad to see Alfie coming around and big Bert playin hard. Z and Datsyuk are still dominating too, I'm lovin it. It IS a long season though and wings are know for slow starts and very strong finishes so I hope they continue and don't do the opposite this season.
10-20-2013 06:57 PM
st1264 Well, the Wings have had a decent start... then they play a game in Phx where they give up 5 unanswered goals. The opposing goalie scoring was a little insult to injury

It's a long season though.

st1264 Don't get your hopes up guys... the Wings have always been competitive but I don't see them dominating in the new division. Hope I'm wrong, but I'll be cheering anyway!

Concentrating on the Tigers and Lions. Tigers will be in tough against the A's, who beat them up during the regular season.

Looking forward to hockey, watched the Tor/Mon fightfest last night. Hope the Wings recreate some of the old rivalries they had in the past.
