It would appear this MAY be the hard top bolts rattling against the jack.
Jack is out, bolts are out, I will drive it a day and see.

|newal||On the tailgate a couple of inches below the latch is a black plastic piece called a bumper. When the tailgate is closed, the bumper slides on a black plastic part on the door frame called the stabilizer. If these are just barely touching, there will be a loud rattle, like you have described. Try putting some grease on the stabilizer and drive it to see if the rattle goes away. If it does, loosen the screws that hold the stabilizer in place and move it towards the tailgate just a little at a time until you get good contact. I used white grease on the stabilizer which made it easy to see where the bumper was contacting it.|

Nobody has suggested it yet, but there is always of option of buying a louder stereo system and just turning it up to 11.

I'm feeling a bit OCD because of it.
And I have the tailgate vent removed already so it's not that.

|Riccochet||The vent on my tailgate is retardedly loose. It rattles from time to time. Check that.|

I had the exact noise in my '13 jk. I finally took it back to the dealer and they had to replace the spare tire mounting bracket. Solved the problem.

|airboss||By "shit in the storage area" I assume you mean the jack & tire iron?|

Maybe Obama lost his change back there...
Open the tailgate and bang on the latch mechanism cover with your fist to see if you can detect if anything is loose in there. Then try banging on it again when closed. Only other suggestion is throw someone in the back to try and find it while it's happening.

Noise in tailgate area
I have a noise driving me nuts in my 2012 Wrangler Unlimited Sahara.
At slow to medium speeds 5 to 40 mph I hear a very tinny rattle from the rear area.
It sounds like the rear door lock linkage is rattling against the inside of the tailgate sheet metal.
I have checked everything I can think of. Spare tire mount.
Shit in the storage area.
I can get into more detail if needed.
Just trying to see if this jars anyone's memory as far as sound description.
At this point I'm going to take everything off the tailgate, tire, tire mount, etc. and see if I can pinpoint.
