Thegame UPDATE -

Finally solved the noise problem!!! Well I diddn't but the shop that did the lift and tires did. Turned out to be one of the brake lines was tapping the frame of the Jeep. They found it and fixed it in a few short moments.

legitposter I looked at mine and my wife's '13's, I don't see any rubber pieces around either the body latch receiver end or the gate latch. If you close your gate and pull up and down hard on the handle can you make any clunking sounds?

You might try driving on an empty side street with the trunk (gate) open and see if it eliminates clunks.

Thegame Quick update -

I noticed that in the tunk area (not the silver latch) but the part that closes in on it, the U shaped part. I looked at a co workers 2011 JKU and their U part seems to be enclosed in a tight black rubber. Mine is not. Mine seems to be metal on metal. Maybe it fell off or maybe it never had it from the factory. I will try and see if I can get a part number for that rubber piece of do a home fix for that issue.

Thegame Thanks everyone I will try all these suggestions this weekend. I wonder why I am only hearing this at slower speeds and over small bumps. Hopefully I'll figure it out soon with all the help from this thread. Thanks again guys.

legitposter It sounds like a rear shock may be loose or rear sway bar connection. Lay under the back of the jeep. Grab a shock and push it around with all your strength and see if you can get any clunk sounds from the top nuts or the bottom bolt/nut. Try the other shock.

Also, check the swaybar link, aka the 'connector thingy' that connects the sway bar to the wheel hub/axle end. Grab this connector and push/pull your hardest. See if you can get the top or bottom bolt/nut to make a clunk sound.

If your rear control arms were worked on during your lift install then those could be the culprits that are clunking. Those bolts have to be torqued really tightly so I wouldn't be surprised.

JPi4.0 Do you have a rear sway bar? Check the links and bolts for slop.
Also unzip your roll bar padding and make sure the roll bar bolts are tight.
I just tightened all my roll bar bolts and creaks and rattles got a lot quieter.

yes, grab a metric socket set and see if they are tight. Mine were loose to the point where I could move the shock a bit. Don't be intimidated.. checking this is easy.

Don't sweat asking questions that others may look at as "beginner stuff".. we all start somewhere.

Yea I did check that and it did seem pretty firmly attached for now.

_3m check your heat shield that hangs over the muffler. mine came loose and made racket much like you are describing.the way its attached is flimsy at best

Ahhhhh lol ok got ya. I'm going to try some black electrical tape soon and see what I can come up with. Thanks for all the suggestions guys. I'll get it one day

The silver loop that the tail gate closes on. Left hand side. Not sure how else to explain it. It's pretty straight forward! Haha.

1quick1 I had a rattle that was driving me insane for a few days coming from the back. I started looking and realized it was my ratchet I had stored in the little cubby by the jack. Food for thought.

How would a non mechanically enclined idiot such as myself do that? Just grab a wrench and socket set and see which size it needed?? Would I be able to tell its loose by just grabbing it??? Sorry I realize how bad these questions are but I am so bad when it comes to this stuff.

clayps Could be the tailgate rattling. Sometimes putting a few rounds of electrical tape around the leading edge of the silver latch will help it close tighter. It worked for me.

SuicideSaints Check all the joints and attach points in the rear end. Get underneath it and try to manually move all the stuff under there until you find something loose. Check your exhaust hangers too. Tighten up any bolts. Try this and see what you find.

ilikeguns check your upper shock bolts (where they attach to the frame).. once i swapped out my shocks and didn't torque properly.. a week later i heard a clank every little bump i went over..

Thegame Also I did buy some dynamat stuff but did not install it yet. I don't think that will solve this noise though. This seems to be something causing it. I just cant diagnose it yet.

Noise and rattle detectives requested.

Hi guys, I have a 2012 JKU Sport S with AEV 2.5 inch lift, AEV Black pintlers, 315 Duratracs and the AEV rear bumper tire carrier. I have this slight rattle that is driving me nuts!! At first I thought it was the jack so I covered that area with some towels and that wasn't the sound. The odd thing is I only hear it at relatively low speeds going over small bumps and it's definitley coming from the back of the jeep. The front tires will go over a bump or tracks and nothing but as soon as the rear goes over the noise can be heard. I'm not very mechanically enclined ( I wish I was) so can anyone suggest what I may be hearing or some things I can check this weekend to try and eliminate this nuisance!! Thanks for any help

PS - I understand it's a jeep and some noises will be had. I don't mind that but I do think this is something that can be fixed if I can just figure out what it is. This is like that Married with Children episode with Al and the mouse lmao
