I painted the hooks on my X on day 2 of ownership. I am very glad I did and have a unique jeep now because of it however it was a full day project. I have a few pics of the progress and how it sits in the garage now.
The rear hooks are about a 15 min job to take off, but the front at a PITA! Removing the front bumper wasn't too bad but disassembling the whole thing to get to the hooks was not as easy as I expected. I ended up having to cut off the speed nuts that were holding the hooks to another part of the bumper and replaced them on the reinstall.
Other than a rattle can of paint and a couple speed nuts it is a pretty cheap modification that really personalizes your rig. I would recommend it to anyone looking to do it and hope that they share their results.

I did my rear hook lime green (taped off bumper) but because I did the mesh of my grill insert green I decided against painting the front hooks. I actually used a simple photo app to play around with different colors on a pic of my Jeep - it helped me decide before I made the changes.

RustOleum Sunset Red + a coat of Clear Coat for mine, seems to be holding pretty well.
Did the front ones when I removed the bumper to install the winch.

I'm also curious was was required to paint the shocks...did you have to remove them?

There a Jeep engineer somewhere laughing. They put that one bolt in an in convent place knowing people will have to remove it.

I don't understand how people act like its easy to take off the front bumper. The two inside nuts on the driver side was almost impossible to get to. The vacuum pump and the cross member get in the way... I cut off my cross member with a sawzall and it made life much easier.
Also the two plastic screws for the top of the bumper did not spin. I didn't strip them, they would not spin. So I just tore it off...

|Krieg2||So my JKU is Billet Silver. Any ideas for a good accent color for tow hooks as well as some interior trim? I'd like something that looks great but doesn't necessarily stick out to someone that doesn't know Jeeps either.|

I did my front and rear hooks also, just Rust-Oleum Cherry Red.

For all those who have the Rock Lobsters' WalMart has Rust-Oleum in a Hot Pink that's a perfect match!

I have a winter chill Arctic and ever since the 10A, I have wanted to copy the same look with orange opposed to red. I had the took the Rubi font for the hood decal and outlined ARCTIC in orange. Now, just trying to find the right shade of orange and the time to get it done.
Is there a trick to removing the rear tow hook? My initial thought (have not actually got under and inspected it yet) is there is just a couple of bolts to remove and replace--is it that simple?

I plasti dipped my front and rear tow hooks this weekend. I used plastidip because I wasn't sure how I'd like the look, plus the stock bumpers only have ~6 months left on my Jeep before they are replaced. The fact that the plastidip may get ruined is fine by me.
I went the route of removing my bumpers to paint the hooks. I had the time plus i used this opportunity to familiarize myself with the assembly of the front and rear bumpers.
I am really starting to love the red accents. Thinking of incorporating it more and more with my already existing black.billet theme.

I removed the bumpers and used xo farm implement red back in march. I liked the way it looked against the black grill on the sand trooper II mopar Moab concept vehicle. Easy weekend project, but I don't see a problem with taping off either.

I trimmed lots o things on my jeep because it made me feel like it was something no one else has and that is the beauty of Jeeps U can build and customize them like no other vehicle!
