|DarrenT||Haha, I did that, I also used a 2' and 3' breaker bar..... at one point I had my feet on the wheel and was lifting my whole body on the bar...... That SOB had been jammed on there for 16 years and wasn't for shifting. Wasn't enough fluid in the system to put enough force behind the wheels to break the nut.... So mandraulic was the only way felt it Saturday...|

|Plowboy1970||To get the nut loose I put a socket on the nut and a 3/4 drive breaker bar on that. Turned the wheel until the bar was against the drivers wheel. Turn until the nut pops. First Jeep took 2 hours. This last time it was my 3rd Jeep. I did it in 45 minutes. It gets better!!|

Well, Friday night was awesome...... NOT!!
I started on the box replacement around 3pm, and finished up by around half seven (half hour break for beer and food...)
Most things came apart easy enough, bit of PB Blaster (half a can) did the trick.
The pitman arm was a real POS though, took 2 & 1/2 hours to crack the nut, remove the tie rod end and pitman arm. In the end I hammered out the tie rod end and just cut down the mushroomed end, enough so I could get the castle nut on and torque it. I'll replace the tie rod end this week anyway as the seal was shot.
I didn't get any pics, I'd hoped to, but I was balls deep in steering fluid
Jeep also didn't account for sausage fingers when they designed the location of the steering lines either... that was 30 minutes!!
Still, no leaks, nice light non-squeaky steering - Happy happy happy . Just $90 lighter for the pleasure.

That's not bad. Didn't even dare check the prices in Napa....
$75 is reasonable, plus I'll fit it myself. I'm just a tight arse I suppose and I hate spending money.... especially after I just spent the best part of $600 a few days ago, that's 4 days pay!!

The durango unit has no benefit to me either, just a budgetary choice right now.
And I suppose it's there if I ever do change my mind and decide to put big tires on.
Pissed off today, just seems like one thing after another right now.

Well, it's pissing out fluid now probably pissing a quart faster than I could.
Just waiting on the junk yard to call and confirm they pulled the durango box....
I was looking forward to a nice relaxing long weekend too.

|Jerry Bransford||I read the procedure for rebuilding a steering box & it wasn't anything I'd want to tackle. If my steering box started leaking enough to need repair, I'd install a new or rebuilt steering box.|

|DarrenT||I just arranged to borrow a pitman puller, that's eased my mind a little. I looked it over some more and its not that big of a job - stu-offroad.com has a pretty good write up on the removal and replacement. I have all the tools I need so it's now just a matter of getting my hands dirty. I reckon a couple of hours should see it done. Fingers crossed.....|

Mine started leaking from the same spot. I ended up buying a rebuilt TJ box instead of trying to repair it. According to the FSM you need to correctly set the bearing preload when you replace the input shaft seals, and I didn't have to the tools to do that part right.
It's not a hard job. I was able to do it with my dad helping in a few hours. PB Blaster + a propane torch helped the pitman arm come off without too much of a fight.

Steering box swap out
So, I'm under her last night and noticed a ton of fluid coating the underneath driver-side chassis......
I knew the garage had replaced a brake line the day before and figured it might be spilt/leaking fluid. Oh it was leaking fluid alright, but from the pitman seal (see EDIT). So I was reading up and got a price on a durango box for $75 from the local junkers.
I don't intend to ever run tires bigger than what I have, but I can get a durango box cheaper than a TJ one, so why not?
EDIT: On further inspection this morning, it appears to not be a pitman seal issue. It's leaking from the seal around the input shaft.... My whole driver side is coated in steering fluid.
Questions is now if I can find a pitman puller.....
