socal-jk Don't discount it yet. If it makes you feel better my '12 with 12k on it ticks like a 60's buick and the shifter shakes too. Hahaha. If the Jeep tech says it just annoying lifter noise, meh, lifter noise is more of an annoyance then anything. Hard to tell without looking at it. I have only seen a handful in my career that have collapsed and caused a misfire. I can't imagine the lifters being expensive or hard to change if the price is right on the rig. There is a huge difference in a top end noise and a bottom end noise. I had an old 8V VW that had a lifter tick for 80k miles before I sold it, and from the looks of it my Pentastar will be the same.

Oil burning, well, 1.5 quarts could be fine, or bad, depending on when it was full last. A quart every 1k won't hurt anything.

freedomrider What is motivating you to continue to pursue this jk. Its too expensive first off and more than likely even if the tick gets fixed there are tons of other issues from being poorly maintained. 99% of the posters on here have told you to RUN AWAY fixed or not. There are tons of them out there way take the risk its not worth it. Find another one or tell him you'll give him 5k then there is no risk. Either you get it for 5k or he says no and you find another one. WIN-WIN

bt_osu Does not at all sound like he has taken care of it and his willingness to show it to you with the tick speaks volumes. If he was really concerned, it would've all ready been fixed. You can not run far enough fast enough from this bad deal. You'll find another one!!! Good Luck!

Rmiller31 Personally I wouldn't. Rebuilt engines can work great and they can also just never be the same. There are tons of jeeps out there to get.

If a jk ends up being out of your budget take a look at a tj. I've had both and you get the full jeep experience in both of them. At times I really miss my old 4.0 tj

Just don't want it so bad you'll blindly look over stuff. Also if he gets it fixed he will want more for it is imagine.

music_man185 If the owner gets the lifters fixed and the ticking is gone, do you guys think it would be a safe buy? I could have swore the mechanic said it was 1 1/2 quarts low, but my girlfriend said she only heard 1/2 quart low. I am going to call him back and find out which it was.

My girlfriend is actually distantly related to the owner. She informed him that we wouldn't be buying the jeep due to 2 mechanics saying the noise we were hearing was an engine tick. He asked what her dad said the problem was (knowing he is a mechanic). She told him that he said without looking at it and just by driving it, it sounded like a lifter. He sounded concerned and said he would get it fixed and call us back

JTPhoto JK I agree walk away. The 1,000,000th wrangler JK just came off the assembly line today so you have a lot of potential out there just be patient.

As for the 3.8, with those figures realized that indicates there are in excess of 800,000 Wranglers with 3.8s. If they were such a bad engine we would hear a lot more about it then we do. Many of these engines are high mileage and now creeping up on 7 years old.

Scott2373 If you have any question in your mind, walk away. That is your gut warning you. I agree with almost every other poster on this thread. DO NOT BUY IT! You'll only regret it later if something happens and kick yourself for dropping 10k on something you'll never get your money back on if something major is wrong with it. There are a LOT of Jeeps out there. You can find a mint one for $10,000

nobndry Look on the bright side, if u were to buy it and the engine dies, that would justify a Hemi swap right? I would walk away though. I know that sometimes a cracked manifold could make that ticking noise, check that.

Rmiller31 I don't think all the 3.8's are as bad - the 3.6 hasn't exactly started out with a spotless record lol.

Just treat it right and it will probably last you. If I went to buy one tho and it ticked like that I wouldn't even consider it. I had a tick like that in a TJ at 140k miles and once then engine was apart it look like someone dropped a hand grenade in it. I had a piston skirt in pieces.

music_man185 Thanks again for all the help. My girlfriends dad is also a mechanic. He drove it this evening. It didn't make the noise immediately. He thought there was nothing there. But eventually, it started. He parked it and looked under the hood and said it was definitely an engine tick.

I guess part of me kept questioning it because in my mind, I had already bought it. I have been picturing myself driving it this weekend all week long.

LewdDude my 08 started making that noise and the number 4 and 6 bearings were shot! $5600 repair!!!! RUN from the 3.8's

redbilly Don't buy this Jeep. Leaking that much oil after a recent oil change is a problem.... That thing has been driven hard and put up wet!

Seriously? Is this the only jeep left in your area? I have taught my kids that if you question something like you are, it's best to move on. Ticks, rattles and shakes are never good. Find a different one already.

Dragonscape Go and buy that Jeep... if you want to spend more time in the shop than on the trail
also, expect to spend your mod money on repairs to keep it running. What you have described so far adds up to a new clutch possibly the whole assembly, the throw out bearing is getting ready to let go, the tick will require a "valve job" which will affect other things and the low oil at 100K means the main bearings are well worn or could just throw a rod.
Good News: if its cheap enough its ideal to swap out a new hemi, some pro-rock 60 axles and a few other mods.

jkjeeper06 I'd also pass on this jk. But the oldest ones are almost 7 years old now so there are many for sale and you can probably find others. My guess is the guy had no idea the jeep doesn't take 5 qts, it takes 6 or even a little more depending on your filter.

I'd just look for a different jk. There are tons out there. Idk if you've tried Craigslist, but buying straight from the owner will save you money and also give him more money at the same time

WatchThis! 100k is nothing for a 3.8 that is taken care of. But someone trying to sell something and not even making sure it is toped off with oil says a lot about how they took care of it to me. Personally I would pass, people don't try to sell a Jeep cheap out of the kindness of there heart.

music_man185 Thanks for the info. I feel extremely disappointed. I've always wanted a wrangler, and I love the look of the jk's. This was the first jk I found in my price range. I was beyond excited when I thought I was about to get a jk.

CrazyBull I have a 12' and yes the shifter shakes but that's just the mount..new or not new tires. Tick is bad though. Don't risk going for a bad motor.

_3m my engine makes that tick sound and has done so since day one, i have an 07 Sahara. i run 10-w30 full synthetic and that reduces the tick a bit. Mine also consumes oil and the shifter shakes at speed. Its your call but i'd say if you're nervous then walk on. there are other units to be had. always go with your gut.
