Pics can say so much more.
This covers a wide spectrum of what not to do.

I spent money on a Navteq 2013 Maps update for my 2009 JKU RER system, and I bought it pretty much the day it was released. The update killed Sirius Traffic which was pretty much the only reason I have a Sirius account anyhow. So... I'd warn a friend not to buy the Navteq Maps update until it has been out for a while.
I spent money on the MOPAR cargo netting for the back area of my Jeep. It sucks because the elastic isn't very strong, and it really isn't sized fo the back of a Jeep. Anything that can roll or slide out from under it will, and anything of any measurable substance just stretches it out and bangs around the back anyhow. It us iseless unless you are using it to hold mittens or a baseball cap in the back with the top off. So... I'd warn a friend to not buy a MOPAR cargo net and buy a stronger one that is right sized for the Jeep cargo area.

This thread is hysterical, but not what I hoped for.
I have had my JKU for a month now and other than a dead pedal on the drivers side and OEM mud flaps (read the whole "Truth about splash guards thread) I am still stock.
What I was hoping for was a: "I spent my $$ on this and it was a bad idea thread"...
That said, Carry on! This has been fun to read.

The only mods I’d really steer someone clear of are those of poor quality or workmanship. One of the things I love most about Wranglers is how customizable they are. Throwing good money away on crappily made products is never good. Some people are also impatient. They settle on less expensive mods instead of saving for a while longer to get what they really want. I know many people who wanted 35’s or 37’s, but got 33’s instead, and then upgraded a year later because they weren't satisfied. Same thing with lifts.
Research what you want. Save for it if need be, and then do it right the first time. Don’t compromise for impatience. Aesthetic choices be damned.

didn't expect the rockstar hate. I'm still considering these at 17x9 for 33x12.50s

"What are the upgrades mods you would tell a friend to avoid"
None specifically, though I think throttle body spacers and bored over throttle bodies on a 6 cylinder non-diesel are sort of like throwing money away. Anyhow, other than that, I'd tell my friend to avoid people who tell you what sucks for you on your vehicle, home or person. No one is going to die if someone rolls a Jeep on 20" rims, so I wouldn't personally bother to mention it. I probably wouldn't hang out with someone who thinks that is a good idea, but then again choices have consequences and we wouldn't likely agree on other things anyhow.

|akjoshualee||So I just bought my jeep. The only damage to it is on the hood and it is something only I notice. I'm going to use the hummer hood appliqué to well cover it up, because I'm a cheap bastard. And it serves my purpose. Anyway back to the thread chrome, hate chromed out jeeps.|

|Womjello||Modifying the stock bumpers. I added tow hooks ($100 Mopar), VDP stubby kit ($89) and am now pricing winch plates ($). For $400+ I could have gotten an aftermarket stubby bumper that was winch ready. I didn't plan ahead.|

The worst mod(s) I've ever seen was where a guy took a JKU, replaced it with a Japanese engine, shortened it, put suicide doors in the rear, replaced the front axle with IFS, and put all new body panels on it to make it less capable offroad:

Oh, i didnt think about that. My bad. I shouldve known better since indiana does that all the time.
I had assumed it was like the DNR trucks they use on the sand dunes here in michigan. Fully outfitted for offroad and recovery. Except they have reasonable wheels.... not rockstars.
It was a cool truck though.
