Kevbz although usually long gone by now, there is another plate, located under the plastic JEEP cover up behind the front bumper. Its screwed to the lower part of the grill

Usually it a a small speck of rust by now, but you never know.

Pull the cover back and take a peek, it might be there.

It's actually in the same spot on all models but we drive on the other side

Here's a pic of my ID label indicating the transmission code (DGA)

Attachment 250155

I've noticed on some years, all the codes are not in the same places on the ID labels but have a look for...
DDD - which is NV3550
or
DDK which is AX15

Mine is DGA (32RH 3 speed auto) But also seen the 3 speed auto described as DGG
And if anyone is interested DG6 is 42RLE (4 speed auto)

EDIT - Not that it will concern you but my 1997 FSM lists
DDO as AX15
DDQ - AX5
DGD - 30RH
Maybe some (or all) of the codes changed at some point as I've seen different codes for AX5 and 32RH.
So strange. Mines missing??? I'm thinking that maybe the floor has been re-done.
Thanks for the info.

Thanks. I'm leaning toward the NV3550.

Thanks for the welcome.
I've got the diffs covered it's the transmission that's giving me grief.
As we have the same Jeep, are you experiencing any 2nd gear issues - grinding to be exact, and worse when cold? I did buy it this way, however, I did change the trans oil to Royal Purple - Synchromax manual gearbox oil, but it's still no good.
That's why, I believe I need to be sure which gearbox I have as the NV3550 takes a different oil to the AX5 & AX15.

Thanks again,

OZZI goes and buys a JEEP!

Hi ALL,
Thanks for adding me.
I've just gone and bought myself a 2001 TJ Wrangler 4 litre 5 speed manual, soft-top. I LOVE IT!

For the life of me I cannot work out what gear box I have:
1: AX5
2: Ax15
3: NV3550

Any clues, other than the workshop repair manual, for some reason, the plate underneath the drivers seat is not there. I've looked at the transmission, near the drain plug and only found:

097
45 or 4S - can't make out if it's 5 or S
A

It's set out under each other like above.

Thanks again,
Shane.
