jebby ax5 stick shift bumps it to 2000 straight from the owners manual

KaiserJeep FYI only the 6-cylinder TJ's are rated to tow 2000lbs. The 4-cylinder TJ SE's are rated to tow 1000lbs. LJ's are rated to tow 3500lbs.

Realistically, when you modify the Jeep by fitting larger diameter tires, you alter the COG and compromise both handling and braking, and the tow rating needs to be decreased or "de-rated" from the stock figure.

This.

I would never risk others safety by towing a heavy load with a SWB vehicle on roads with alot of traffic.....but I would use my lawn tractor to tow a boat the 1 mile I needed to get to my boat launch if I had to.

Jeeps actually make great boat launch vehicles (towing not so much) because it's common to get a good amount of algae on concrete ramps and using the 4WD can get you up it instead of spinning your rear wheels.

No troubles the only thing is that i was going 70-80 in 4th gear all the time and pedal to metal. It did overheat just up to 220 but it cooled down pretty fast.

jebby Light traffic slow speed flat road 1.5 km think I'm gunna go for it isn't dont want to hurt my jeep
05-16-2013 01:03 PM
SuicideSaints If you are able to go slow and no traffic I would do it. I used a little YJ back in the day for farm work. I would drag a trailer with hay and fence mending equip. never going more than 5 miles really. It worked fine, if you are going to be going on busy roads I might rethink it......
05-16-2013 12:34 PM
Jerry Bransford If you will be on a road with traffic, I wouldn't even consider it. I regularly towed my 3500 lb. boat with my wife's Grand Cherokee with a 4.7L V8 engine & though it was rated to tow 7500 lbs. with its towing package, that JGC barely handled that boat.

So if you're on a back country road, maybe since it's just for the weekend... but definitely not if the road is full of traffic. I used my 4.0L TJ to move my 3500 lb. boat around on private property & it was ok for that but...

towing - think i can?

I have a 97 TJ 2.5L with the ax5 stick shift. I tow my little fishing boat all the time no problems 1000lb tops (its rated to tow up to 2000 lbs) my cousin asked me to take his boat out this weekend to test some work we did. His is a fish and ski coming in around 3000 lb plus fuel (so say 3200 to be safe) he lives 1.5km from the launch and its all flat, slow and nicely paved. the launch is a good launch too so 4lo should get me out not problem. think its a bad idea for me to tow his boat to the launch and back this weekend?
