indirocz28 I believe it is mostly in how you prep the surface.

Plus they recommend 5-6 coats for the body plus the prep spray.

Huh. My experience is with my aluminum cane which gets strapped to the back of my recumbent trike and hit by all sorts of rocks and gravel.

No problem man, my whole jeep looked just like your hood. I gave it a good wash then polished it out by hand. I could of got a buffer and done it way faster and better, but Im pleased with the results of simply doing it by hand. Its no longer pink so Im happy with that lol.
Not sure what direction your wanting to go with this, but if thats rust on the drivers side rocker you could always run diamond plate over them. Might not be the perfect way of fixing it but a shot of rust reformer and and a good coat of spray paint would seal it up. Then some diamond plate to hide it all. Or even you metioned your son trying his hand at fabing some bumpers, rocker guards that covered it up wouldnt be too hard.

indirocz28 Actually, from all the videos, the more coats (up to 4 or 5) the better it is at resisting abrasion and unwanted peeling. I've seen some of road tests of it against salt and rocks and snow and mud, and 1600psi pressure washers..

Then they just peel it off and car is good as before.

WGHyrum Plastidip will peel off. That can be good or bad. If you put a thinner coat on, it will be harder to peel.
I am working on building mine slowly and mostly from craigslist and hardware stores. I did splurge on the suspension, but it is a BDS, so it was worth it.
I am jealous of that price tag.

It's a 4cyl, with 108,000 on it.

Thanks for the rubbing compound idea!!! I was thinking about painting it at a later date, but that will be useful until then.

kywaterman That sounds like a wonderful deal you were able to make, looking forward to seeing more from this project. My yj was faded out just like this one when I got it, a little rubbing compound and its shinin' like a new paint job. Is it a 4 or 6 cyl?

tbloid I also put the other set of tires on it. This weekend my 14y/o wants to try his hand at building a set of bumpers. I'll post pics as it goes.

tbloid It took about 3 days playing, and some help from members on here. Along with a simple tune up, and she's running like a top.
I forgot to mention another issue,,, no exhaust.

After I got it running and went topless :




Now for the next Craigslist buy, the one that sparked the build idea...

Looking for a suspension lift. I found another reasonable ad, a 4" RE lift ( brand new in the packaging) for $350

Ok, here we go...
I've been on the lookout for a reasonable Jeep for me and my son to have some fun with, as well as teach him some of the basics of wrenching. I wasn't planning on going exactly this route, but after a few good buys, and a bunch of nudges from people to see if I could do it. I've decided that this build will be only from good deals on Craigslist, either used as is or modified, or we will completely build the parts from scratch.

Now to begin;
I found this 92 yj in the auto parts section. They were selling the tops, doors and tires. I called them to ask what they were going to do with the Jeep. I was told after the parts were sold it was headed to the scrap yard. One quick question later ( if it was for sale) and I bought it. But, in order to get it I had to buy the hardtop, softtop, bikini top, all 3 sets of doors, and both sets of tires.
Everything set me back a whopping $650

The pic they sent me :



The problems it had were :

Fuel tank strap and skid plate rusted off.
Right front spring bent down.
Rust holes on driver's side floor.
Turned over, but wouldn't start.
