TomStev My 2012 is at 11k and the whines when I accelerate or throttle in neutral. I'm seeing different things on different sites where the dealer has replaced various things and it still make it and one who's dealer said it was normal operation. Mines started to get worse and we tracked it down to the alternator we believe. I called the dealership I like and let them know that I was bringing it in tomorrow and what I think it is. He told me it could be the alternator but it could be the water pump because its below the alternator. He just had a 2012 rubicon in two weeks ago doing the same thing and it was the water pump.
I saw on another thread on the forum 5 min ago that it was the alternator for them.
I'll let you guys and gals know what the dealership says. I have a 3yr, 36k warranty like everyone but I didn't know bumper to bumper coverage was only for the first 12k. I called Chrysler today and for 0 interest and payments each month for 24 months ($2,800 and some odd dollars) I added the life time unlimited bumper to bumper warranty and it even covers the shocks (wow). If I choose to trade in before my 3yr warranty is up then I call and they stop my payments and refund (minus a small administrative fee) and send my money back that I paid. The warranty will even cover any add ons that are not factory as long as they are moose brand which I though was cool. I'm the kind of person that will own a vehicle until it doesn't run anymore so a lifetime bumper to bumper unlimited mileage warranty seems to be a great investment.

FYI: I just found out that when my free oil changes are up, you can by your oil changes in bulk from the warranty department. So next year or when my last the oil changes are gone since I change mine every 3k I'm going to purchase them in bulk. The 6 year package is 24 oil changes for $240. That's comes out to $10 per oil change. Can't even do it your self for that price! Just thought I'd let y'all know about that since I just found out. Big chunk up front but but big savings in the long run on oil changes.

Braindead Ever find anything out on that? I bought a brand new 2013 JKU in Jan and at first there wasn't any whistle, but it started just 2 days ago out of nowhere (I have just under 6K miles on it now) Same thing, below around 35 it isn't anything there but over that speed it is. Also, once it starts, the tone of it stays the same; it doesn't get higher as I go faster which I found odd.

rlpickering13 Noise is still there, not sure if it could be coming from the front wheels possibly.

nvkid mine whistles when air is on recirculate (above 35)

kjeeper10 "thinking"

Clutch TSB's on earlier Jk's for squeaks/whines but under load I think.

rlpickering13 I don't believe its the speakers, I have kept the radio off while checking the noise. It also does not sound like wind noise, I don't know how to describe it but it sounds mechanical.

JKWrangler2012 i haven't noticed any wind-whistles (or otherwise) on the 2012 JK... the last car... at 55MPH+ the large side mirrors would whistle... annoying!!

...is the noise coming through you speakers? not sure why, but if i'm charging the MP3 while in use, i get a humming noise... who knows..

Yeah it's prob a hood latch whistling or something to that extent. It's brand new, try not to worry to much

rlpickering13 Thanks for the advice, I have only put it in 4wd prior to first hearing the noise, I will try re-engaging the 4wd and disengaging to see if it helps.

recreate.me I know nothing about engines but could it be a wind leak? Like a tiny gap that causes the whining when the speed picks up?
11-07-2011 07:38 PM
Overtrained Did you try and put it in 4wd? Sounds like the front differential could be the culprit.

2012 - High Pitch Whining at 35 mph

I have a 2012 Sport with a manual transmission, with only 450 miles. I noticed Saturday at around 350 miles that once I reached 35 to 40 mph I started to hear a very faint high pitch whining noise. The noise continues as the speed increases but seems to stop below 35 mph. Also the noise is present when the transmission is in gear, when the accelerator is pressed or when it is in natural, pressing the clutch does not seem to affect the noise. The noise is very hard to pin point, you can actually hear it better with the windows up, because of the wind noise with them down, it seems to be more concentrated on the front left side. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated, the noise is very minor and being the perfectionist that I am I want to be sure that I am not worrying for no reason.
