krisbman I replaced both calipers rotors and had my brakes bled in less than an hour and i think it was less than $150. All parts from NAPA

MarkGLHS small world...my TJ had a frozen brake caliper just this week...i let my local jeep dealership go thru the entire front braking system with new OEM parts.

thgr8alex Ya i dont remember any washers, from what ive been reading, places like autozone and oreillys dont have them but napa does so il be running up to napa tomorrow to get them. Ill be sure to get the washers too. Strange how mine had none. And the hose was dripping just a little at the connection so tightened up a bit more to stop leakand bam, broke in half, luckily i was able to use pliers and unthread it out of there. But those bolts were old and a little rusty, maybe thats why they snapped

krisbman Its a banjo fitting and it should have copper washers on both sides of the fitting. How you broke the head off is puzzling, even without the washers you should be able to feel the bolt bottom out. I dont think ive ever broke a 3/8 bolt even putting air to it.

jwink41 My only experience with brake calipers is on motorcycles, so this may not be much help, but calipers are calipers (for the most part). I would think there should be washers on the banjo. Most motorcycle brake calipers I've serviced had two each. I'd just ask the O'Reilly parts guy. He/She could look it up.

thgr8alex Ok did some googling and figured out its a 3/8"-24 banjo bolt. Pretty common for these to break apparently.. Lol but i kept seeing talk of washers and dont remember mine having washers at the banjo bolt to hose connection. It slightly leaked which is why i tightemed it (too much and broke it) but should i get washers here? I mean is there a certain type or will any washer that fits there do the trick? Also if i buy the new banjo bolt would washers be included?

thgr8alex Good and bad news, i got new calipers, new pads, and my rotors smoothed out on a lathe and installed everything tonight but ended up breaking the drivers side bolt that goes through the brake line (the one that has the holes in it to allow brake fluid to flow, cant think of name of it right now). Luckily it was just the head so i was able to unscrew it and stop the brake line up. My question is now where can i get one of those bolts? Are they sort of universal and everycar has the same one or are they jeep specific? Do you think a local autozone or oreillys would have one or do i need to go to the stealership or order one online? Really a disappointing moment as i was almost done besides bleeding...

thgr8alex Heres a pic of the driver side caliper (one that siezed up on me) it was a PITA to remove haha but finally got it off.

thgr8alex Yep just got all my parts from oreillys today and waiting on my rotors to be smoothed down just to be safe. Chillin at sonic haha will begin install in a few..

Seized caliper. Happened to me about 2 months ago. It smelt like something was burning and it kept pulling to the left.

thgr8alex Ok good to know that all of my issues are now narrowed down to one thing. Phew i was afraid i was running into multiple issues here. Thanks a ton guys! Also just to verify, calipers are calipers right? Theres no good or bad ones? Any caliper that fits from an auto store is good right? Or are there certain brands to aim for or stray from?

chevymad Brake locking up can cause the shake as well.

novi306 That's bare minimum to get you going. You might look at the rotors to see if they are warped and the brake pads themselves Just call your local part stores and check prices Good luck !!

thgr8alex Good point, might as well while im at it. So new calipers and lines? Anything else needed? And where does everyone recommend getting these for a decent price?

novi306 Would not hurt to replace the brake line from caliper to the frame. Over time the rubber line degrades

Dare I suspect either a pad is dragging or caliper hung up, just had the same on my daughters vehicle, changed out the brake pads and rotors it had eaten one so bad and both guide pins were frozen up creating the constant pressure . if its the brakes, do both on the front to be safe and lube up those guide pins.

thgr8alex Wow that worked really well novi, all wheels were room temp except driver front. It was significantly hotter. And it was pulling to the left as well which makes sense..

novi306 Easy way to check calipers is after a drive feel the wheel on the side it was pulling and see if it feels hotter than the other wheels
