jkp It's always been crank. In the early '70s they went from gross crank HP to net crank. Net includes all the accessories on the engine, air cleaner, exhaust, etc. Therefore, the HP dropped from gross which was just the basic engine.

Since they offered them in different trim levels with different tires -- 29/30/31 -- it would be silly to list RWHP.

Gixxer86g Back in the 70's, they went from crank to rear wheel HP. So my 72 Cutlass 350 4bbl was around 245 rear wheel, in 71 it was 290 crank.

When did they go back to crank?

lindel Because the stock intake already supplies more air than the engine needs. The only way you can increase the amount of air the engine will use would be to either force-feed it (turbo or super charger), or to make physical, mechanical changes to the engine.

You'd have to increase the displacement, or give it a bigger cam, higher ratio rocker arms, head work, etc. If the engine can't "breathe" any better than it already does, a CAI is only going to lighten your wallet a bit.

cchartrand HP is arbitrary. My 04' in stock trim gets out of its own way. Certainly no race car, but that's not what a Jeep is for.😜 That being said, I'm moving up to 33's. Guess what? She's going to be a DOG until I can afford a regear. I'm fine w/ that, that's why it's a "project"!
Regearing ain't cheap, but it'll breath more life into your TJ than any CAI or exhaust mod ever will!

I'd guess in the 180 range at the crank shaft, probably closer to 130 at the rear wheels.

The best way to help it along would be to help it breath better, and a Cold Air Intake is not the proper way to go about that. More cam and better exhaust, after that would come head work. Assuming you don't want to pressurize the engine with a turbo or super charger.

Anyway you go about it, it's not going to be a cheap proposition.

freeskier They were kinda all over the place. I've seen charts as high as 195 and some down in the 170 range. This is also at the crank HP, not at the wheels. My engine being as old as it is I bet the HP at the wheels is pretty depressing.

Stock 4.0L horsepower

This may be a rookie question, but I'm getting mixed information from my searches. I have a '97 TJ 4.0L and I've read that this engine came from the factory with anywhere from 181-190 horsepower. I was just wondering if anyone knows what the actual number is?

Wikipedia indicates 190. I read on a Jeep forum thread 181.
