|gcaughron||I don't have a stroked 327 under the hood. I have an AMC 360 with 11:1 pistons and a Howell fuel injection system. The trans is a modded 727 with a D300 trans case with a terra-low 4:1 kit in it. For gears I have 3.54's for highway driving with the reduction in the transfer case and the torque from the 360 it goes wherever I ask it to. It has been all over Disney OK and the other spots within driving distance from where I live. Good luck with the d44 though. Just hoping my two cents might help you save a bit for the next project as these old Jeeps always need something else! Best of luck.|

|faultymechanics||Yeah but were you running the axle with a stroked 327 under the hood? That much torque and power can easily snap that thing. Probably cheaper to get a dana44|

|gcaughron||Don't discount the model 20. With good axles and maybe a truss it's carrier strength rivals that of a 9-inch ford with the axle tubes being the weak link. Add a truss and it's bullet proof. I have run one for over 15 years with Moser one piece axles and it's been reliable and much cheaper than building/buying a d44.|

|faultymechanics||Nah the front is definitely a dana 44....not sure what to do with the amc 20...any suggestions on where I can get a cheap d44 with discs for the rear....any models they came off of that are cheaper?|

If there is still an AMC 20 in the rear, chances are very good that the stock D30 resides in the front. The D44 was never offered as a stock front axle in a CJ to my knowledge, and most swaps to get a 44 use a Waggy 44 which requires out-boarding the front springs. You can make a D44 with similar axle tube lengths to a D30 but it is a lot of work.
Check for a number casting on the axle web like shown here:

|faultymechanics||Interesting so I have a Dana 44 in the front and the amc 20 in the rear...I think.|

What's in my Jeep?
Hey guys I need help figuring out what axles are on my Jeep. Is there any way I can find out? I think the front and back are Dana 44 but I don't know for sure.
