I just bought a 2013 Rubicon 2dr, manual trans and plan on using it as my daily driver. I test drove several models (manual and auto) and decided that the manual was the perfect fit. Plus on the Rubicon it comes stock with 4:10 gearing. After 3 tanks of gas, I'm averaging 17.4 mpg which is worse than my Altima that I traded in but a hell of a lot more fun to drive.
Like you, I'm usually the guy that drives everyone around so I decided on the 2 door to keep that from happening anymore. Either way though JK or JKU you can't go wrong. Even if you are not going to take it off road much, you might still consider the Rubicon. It comes with a lot of items you would end up putting on anyways. Besides, the wheels on the 2013 look pretty cool. My two cents anyways...

|nobndry||I have a 2010 jk manual with 3:73s and I think it has plenty of power. I wouldn't suggest the auto because it isn't good with the 3.8. If you are carting people around, I would suggest the 4 door. It sucks putting people in the back of the 2 door. I'm very happy with my jeep, and would definitely get the manual hands down.|

Just my two cents but i held out for a 2012 (unlimited sport with auto) and finally found a high milage one for 25K its not a daily driver so the miles didn't bug me but i have no regrets. I drove the 2011 and the 2012 and there was a notible difference you may want to test drive the 3.8 and the 3.6 and let that help you in your decision process.
Either way you can't go wrong with a Jeep.

I cleaned up that previous post and added a few details.
BASICS-For off-roading, acceleration, and bigger tires you want lower axle gears. Lower gears have higher numbers. The numbers represent how many times the wheel turns with each rotation of the drive shaft. The pinion gear may be a factor in that also but that's the rough idea. The common stock values are 3:21 (highest), 3:73, and for rubicons 4:10 (3:73 with autos with the option to upgrade). If you have a stick shift it makes life much better to have lower gearing. You won't need to slip the clutch as much, and will in general be much easier to wheel.
MPG - If your going to keep your wheels at around 32", wheel occasionally, and do a significant amount of interstate driving 3:73 is the sweet spot. Here is my rough estimates on how the MPG works out from too much web wheeling.
3.21 = 21 mpg
3.73 = 19 mpg
4.10 = 17 mpg
BIGGER TIRES-If your going with bigger tires your most likely going to need to do a gear swap in the future. In that case maybe 3.73 factory gearing isn't a big deal because you'll be switching it out anyways.
GEARING CHARTS FOR WHEEL SIZE
NEW 2012+ Engine
TIRES-Tires make a huge difference when wheeling. Certain tires like duratracs are really good in snow and mud. When you upgrade your tires your most likely going to need to upgrade your wheels (rims). Cheap rubicon take-off's can often be found on craigslist.
CHECKING OUT A USED WRANGLER
I cannot give too many tips, but I will say that you should check under the jeep to see how much rock rash it has. There are a good amount of grocery get'ers out there so you can be a bit picky. I'm guessing if it has much chrome it won't have much damage.
SIDE-STEP Wranglers are a bit hard to get in so having a side step is nice. The factory stuff isn't up to offroad. What you want to do is get a set of ace rock rails (cheap, strong, bolt on, lifetime warrenty, made in USA). LINK> Rock Sliders . If you found a wrangler with the side steps I would sell those on craigslist before cracking them open on a rock.
BUYING NEW @ 1% BELOW INVOICE
Wranglers really hold there value well which sort of sucks when buying a used one. You can get 1% below the invoice price almost anywhere with a "Tread Lightly Discount." (Search the name or TL). Dealing directly with internet managers (vs sales guys) over email can help get you there or below. There are also a 1% Costco program. And there is a military discount that I don't think can be added onto the 1% programs.

I'd agree with you, I'd go manual on pre-2012. The clutch isn't a civic clutch but I'm good for around 2 hours of stop and go traffic before I need to rest my leg so even traffic isn't a deal breaker. Plus with a 6 speed its much closer ratio than a 4 speed auto so you can fine tune where you want the RPM's better. Use 4 low off road with a manual. It just makes everything easier and puts less wear on the clutch than normal street driving if you do it right
With that said, both the 4 speed and 5 speed autos are great transmissions. They are reliable and sturdy. The problem with the 4 speed was the gearing in the diffs were usually too high geared(low number) for anything over stock or 33's

If you can afford getting a Rubicon they are awesome. Everything can be upgraded to that level, but the transfer case and Dana 44 front axle would really take a good chunk of change later. Sway bars can be manually disconnected. In reality all stock JK's can majorly get it done, even over some crazy stuff with a bit more wheel spin.
2012+ have the Pentastar/3.6liter. With those years the auto is pretty sweet and went from a 4 speed to a 5 speed. It also added a select gear feature. In the 2007-2011 I would defiantly get a manual personally.
Manuals are fun as hell to drive. It's like having a dog vs a pet fish. You get to have a real sense of being connected to the jeep in good times, AND BAD. Like eating at a Japanese restraint with chopsticks when they bring out the rice.
1-DEEP WATER = NO CLUTCH :The main issue I have is not being able to clutch in while under water deeper than the bottom of the transmission. You can start in gear in 4-low with no clutch if needed. While stalled you can switch gears. (Autos are sealed up but more proven to overheat. 2-MAINTANCE: If you read the numerous auto vs manual threads people will tell you manuals cost less in maintance. They are cheaper and easier to repair for sure. They are going to require a new clutch likely if you keep it long enough. When that is really depends on the user. Wheeling in 4-high (needing more clutch play), keeping a foot on the clutch, or slipping the clutch too much will all speed up the process.

I'm not sure if you can jump start a manual JK any more. I have read that because of not having a carburetor ( or modern electronics at least) it's not possible?
5-THE STICK WILL BOUNCE around like crazy on rough terrain. I think it's kind of cool. Some make a "wrangler rattle" on bumpy ground that would not be cool IMO. In general they may be just a bit louder. I don't notice it. I don't notice that my mud tires are loud either.
6-SHIFTING:They shift like a truck not a sports car. The throws are pretty long. Just test drive one first is what I'm getting at.

Most important is that since you are not experienced in 4x4ing the Rubicon package is a great entry vehicle you do not have to worry about a lot of crazy aftermarket parts or installation. With a Rubicon JK/U there are only a few upgrades to think about lift, tires/wheels/gears, bumpers, and maybe a winch.
But even out of the box Rubicons are built to be VERY capable off-road vehicles, and in my opinion the best bang for the buck Factory 4x4 you can get.

I'm in the market as well, and i think as of recently i'm going to wait for the 2014 models. remember that's only a few months away.
as for the type of trim you should get? if you plan on just driving it and maybe once in a blue moon off roading it, i'd say go with a lower sport model. not only will you have more cash to spend on mods but you won't feel as bad when your taking stuff apart.
If you plan on just keeping semi stock and want more creature comforts get a rubicon.

I agree with the aboves - get a 2012 or newer with a 3.73 rear end, rubi if you can.
I love my manual, especially when I'm towing, but I rented a 2008 Rubicon auto and it was nice to know that slush box was ready to back my play if I got to a place where I needed to "ride the clutch".
The manual has a little more ground clearance, but it doesn't gain you anything in skid plate ground clearance. I mainly got the manual for reliability. If you punch a hole in the casing and all the fluid bleeds out, you might go a very valuable mile in the manual before it implodes, but nowhere in the auto. Also, if your battery or starter gives out in the boonies, you have a chance of push starting the manual.
I got a 4-door for haulling grandchildren. The biggest advantage of the Unlimited is more room, of course, and better stability on whoop-de-doos.
Wait. Have you decided on an Unlimited and you're just debating 2- or 4-door? Go with the 4-door, no brainer.
If you're debating the Unlimited, I wish I'd gotten a stubby. I got the Unlimited largely for it's 4 doors.

I bought a Wrangler for almost all the reasons that you want one. I take trips with large groups and my Jeep is one of the travel vehicles. I have a 10' Rubi 6 Speed. You will not regret getting the 6 speed with the 3.8, it is honestly the way to go and I do not wish I had the Pentastar at all. I do not lack for power, even climbing 7% grades here in Colorado is no problem.
If you plan on offroading and can afford it I recommend getting a Rubicon. Some people say its overkill for most offroaders but I would rather go out in the wilderness with more tools than I need. It is also a great starting platform. You will have pretty much all the internal upgrades that you would want with the Rubicons.

I did a small search and it looks like 2010 Unlimiteds with manual transmissions are ranging from $20K - $25K.
I would say that if you can find a good deal on a '12 or possibly a '13 to go with that. Overall you'd get more bang for your buck as well as more favorable financing options.
If not, stick with the manual on the older JK's. It is a better match to the 3.8 and as was mentioned earlier, try to find 3.73 axle ratio.

|ThermalFZ6||Im a recent new owner (bought in January) - I got a 2007 model 4-door (JKU) manual transmission. No regrets but I would still recommend considering a 2012+ model with the pentastar v6, I'd love to have an extra 80 horses to move the jeep. Just something to consider. Good luck!|

New Jeep buyer searching for advice
Hello, I'm looking to buy my first Jeep soon and would like the opinion of some Jeep owner veterans. I have the general idea that I want to buy a used 2010-ish Wrangler, but I'm a little unsure of what model is right for me.
A little about me. I've never gone off-roading before, but it's definitely something I want to do. However, I'm a busy guy, so it probably won't be something I do all the time.
I don't know a lot about cars mechanically speaking but I'm hoping as a Jeep owner I will learn how to do some of my own repairs.
Also, when I hang out or travel with my friends I'm usually the guy taxiing around everyone else so I've been considering the 4-door Unlimited and I'd really like people's honest opinions on the 4-door Unlimited compared to the other JKs.
I really want manual transmission as well.
Any information is greatly appreciated and any opinions will be helpful. Thank you.
