Here is what my sale look like removed.
Absolutely no pressure on pedal once reinstalled. Plenty of fluid in reservoir.

When I removed the slave there was no steel rod, would there be a way for it to come out on its on and now be in the bell housing? When I pumped my clutch before removing the slave the brake fluid poured out of the low point in the bell housing.

Just remove those two nuts & carefully pull the slave out from the bell housing. A stainless steel pin protrudes out of the slave cylinder. That pin is what pushes through the opening into the inside of the bell housing. It is that pin that pushes out when you step down on the clutch pedal that pushes on the clutch mechanism inside. It isn't connected to anything inside.
No hydraulic fluid will leak out, the slave cylinder is sealed. Oh, that pin is not secured inside the slave cylinder, it can be pulled out. It could possibly (though not likely) even fall out so don't let it fall down inside the bell housing.

So I just undo those two bolts ad have somebody depress the clutch pedal to see how much it moves?
If properly working how far should it move?
Will it spill fluid doing this? If so, I assume I need to refill somewhere?
Again sorry for the basic questions. Never worked on transmission before

|erickpl||Jerry, I know this will be a noob question, but whereabouts would I find the slave cylinder on the bell housing? I'm assuming driver side? Any pics of what to look for? I have the FSM and a Haynes for reference as well, but both are at home.|

|DKirk||I removed my slave and there's no stainless rod, only a spring. It seems fluid is going straight through the slave and out the bottom of the transmission. Could the rod from the slave have come loose and now be in the housing?|

It's hard to say if your clutch issue is related to the hydraulic clutch circuit but it sure could be based on your Jeep wanting to jump forward. That kind of problem could also be related to the throwout bearing which lifts the clutch disk up & off the flywheel when you step on the clutch pedal.
I'd probably unbolt the slave cylinder from the bell housing & see if its stainless steel push rod extends out firmly/properly when a helper steps on the clutch pedal.

This sounds almost exactly like what my 97 is doing.
Did you have any sounds before it started acting this way? Any pops or anything?
I was able to get it to go into gear by getting the TJ to roll a bit, and once moving, I was able to shift a bit easier, but it was still a PITA, but no grinding/whining noises other than me trying to get it into a gear (once in a gear it sounded fine). Even with the clutch engaged, at a stop light it wanted to creep forward a tiny bit. Upon starting it, it even seemed to want to jump forward a bit (it was in 1st gear at the time).
Jerry are you thinking it is the master/slave cylinder setup on the TJ? I have nothing leaking that I can see and the Jeep drove just fine a few days ago.
My TJ has 126500 miles on it, so it wouldn't surprise me if the clutch was ready to go to the great offroad park in the sky, but I would have thought I would have seen more gradual symptoms that one day fine/next day messed up.

While you can buy the slave cylinder separately, not everyone manages to get it installed & all the air bled out successfully afterward. The factory sells the master/slave cylinder as a prefilled/prebled assembly that is ready to bolt in... which is a very simple/fast process that wouldn't require a high level of mechanical expertise.

|jeepwayoflife||My first guess would be the throughout bearing. This pushes the actual clutch disk away when you put your foot down. Maybe that failed and is leaking? Maybe the clutch master or slave cylinder is blown? I've never taken apart a clutch but those are some ideas to lookup and see if they seem similar.|

My clutch started making a little but if a winding sound and was a little hard to shift. Before I could make it home the pedal was on the floor and I couldn't shift. Limped home starting it in gear. Once home I started looking things over and added some fluid to the slave pump the clutch a couple times and fluid was pouring out what I believe is called the bell housing of the tranny. I already have a new clutch on the way because that was my first thought and I hadn't done any troubleshooting. Any thoughts are appreciated. I'm not much of a mechanic.
