sounds like you have the timing lined up correctly based on you checking the timing marks on the chain itself. I would take a step back now and re-check everything.
Do you have the wires in the correct firing order?
Do you have the firing order going in the right direction? Many people have installed it backwards. sitting here I dont remember the direction but I mean going clockwise or counter clockwise when its the other direction.
Do you have fuel pressure at the rail? Try cranking it over then press in schrader valve to see how strong the pressure is. If you have a fuel pressure gauge even better.
Are you sure you have spark and if so how did you test it?
Since you tried the ether rout and it didnt fire up then I am leaning towards spark being non existing or off timed.

|jandaso||so you got fuel, air, good compression and spark....been there and in my own cases it has been because of the timing. wish i could be any more help especially when you already stated that the timing is correct.|

|Mypantera||I think mine was just before or after as well. Here is something you can try to see if it is timing related or not: Take the hold down bolt completely out of the distributor and then hold down the distributor while a friend tries to start it. Slowly turn the distributor while he/she is cranking it over. Tell them to turn off the engine if it tries to start or actually does as the distributor will try to walk out of the engine without it bolted down. If it starts / try to start then take a look where everything is and adjust it as needed.|

|wheelinman88||ive taken the distributer out like 8 times and reinstalled it. with the #1 cylinder at TDC on the compression stroke i cant seem to get the rotor to directly face the #1 plug on the cap. its either just a hair before it or just a hair past it. i have the timing mark on the vibration dampener lined up with the "0" mark .|

|Mypantera||Check your firing order on your plugs and also to see if you have the distributor in correctly. If you have all 3 then it should start unless something isn't firing at the right time. I had to pull my distributor and put it in wrong not once but twice... it would turn over but nothing else...no backfire, no trying to start nothing... got the distributor in right and she fired right up.... I am thinking its your distributor is off, align the timing mark on the balance with the tab on the timing cover then check where your rotor is pointing....|

will turn over but will not start
ok... so I`ve been trying to figure out this issue for a few weeks now. i have a 1997 tj with a 4.0L that will turn over but will not start or even sputter. i just replaced the cam, lifters, and push rods due to a malfunction with the comp cam i had in it. i had the new cam bearings installed at a machine shop and also had them make sure the head was still ok. the timing marks on the crank and cam gears are set correctly, new distributer set correctly, new plugs and wires, new cam sensor,new crank sensor, have spark, have fuel, and have compression. any ideas on what to look at next? this is driving me crazy! its about to be campin season and im not sure my civic can make it up the trails!
