Wow! A challenging trail that's legal!
Usually there is a perfectly good dirt road with a "No Vehicle" sign. I'm flummoxed by this turn of events.
If sinbob wanna try it, start a thread under Nevada Forum. I'm game.

Where To Start? California/Nevada

Yesterday I was in extreme eastern California in an area administered by the Las Vegas BLM field office I'm sure. The road we were on was shown on official BLM maps as a 4x4 "Open Route" through the Resting Springs Wilderness Area(click here for map - Resting Springs Wilderness Area Map), and as such was also posted on the ground along the route at several locations with Carsonite signs. Though this trail is open through the wilderness area according to the map, but it isn't actually a through route.
About 1/2 way through the wilderness area, the road climbs to a ridge overlooking an old mining operation and another road. There is a foot and motorcycle trail for about 1/4 mile that connects with the lower road, but getting an ATV or larger 4x4 down or up is out of the question as the trail sits. I suspect in the past, the road continued on down past the mine, but over the years erosion has sluffed the trail closed.
I'm new to Nevada, but when we lived in Colorado, grant money was available for trail maintenance and our Jeep club obtained tens of thousands to stabilize, improve, and in a couple cases actually open trails. We often got volunteer help with heavy equipment, but when we had to hire work done, that grant money did the trick. Unfortunately, I was not involved in any of the grant requests, just a worker bee once the grants were awarded.
I questioned some folks in my local club, but I got the look of "you're nuts" when I asked about the possibility of opening the route. The trail could connect the Amaragosa Valley 10 miles north of Shoshone in California with California 178 near the Nevada border. I happened to run into a magazine article about the Amaragosa Valley Conservancy and their desire to increase tourism. A Jeep trail into the valley would certainly do that, but getting BLM permission, money, local support, and worker bees to get the job done sounds pretty intimidating.
I'm not a civil engineer so from my perspective, a dozer could open that 1/4 mile section of road in a day or two. Of course, I'm the eternal optimist about projects and how long they take, but my question really is...
