Timebomb1031 I received the support bracket from smittybuild and put it on. So far so good. Hopefully I don't have that problem again.

Timebomb1031 LOL. ... I wish it was that simple. Smittybuild sent me the support bracket to fix it. Put it on yesterday and so far so good. I'm still skeptical to be honest with you. If it continues to fly open by itself I'm gonna raise hell and tell them they need to make it right. I spend a good bit of money on that and they are selling them know they have the issues. 👊

Dan216 April fools! When you weren't around I opened the latch on the bumper. Muahahaha

So this is the best I could do to insure it doesn't fly open again till my support bracket gets here. They said 3 days. We shall see.

Timebomb1031 I finally got somewhere with this. After calling smittybuild directly and explaining the issue they Immediately offered to fix the problem by sending the missing piece to the kit. Turns out thd is a very common problem. What pisses me off is that they know about it but sell the system as is anyway and wait for people to call an complain or possibly hurt someone else or themselves before offering a solution. Not to mention there's is an area that had started to rust because it hit another piece when it flung open. I do not recommend the XRC rear bumper to anyone.

RJL1 Looks like your tire carrier is a timebomb.

Bada bing.

SHADYDC that could have been really bad, and if its done it twice , chances are its only going to get worse. def need to contact them and see if they have periminate solution

Cons_Table It may be a feel a little jerry rigged, but you could always run a bungee cord/ball bungee through the hole in the lever and the shackle. I would think this would hold the lever down since I am assuming you lift that silver lever up to open it? It would make it a little more convenient than a bike lock if you have to get into it.

NC Bear maybe someone is messing with you? kids.... In the meantime, I would suggest a bicycle cable with lock. That would keep it closed if the latch does fail, or it will keep kiddie's from unlatching it.

Either way post your solution.

Timebomb1031 Thank you everyone for the advice. I think I should call the manufacturer. It scared the crap out of me. I'm just do thankful no one was hurt.

dirtybiketrash I would contact the manufacturer directly. They may have had other reports on this issue, and may be able to give some guidance on how to correct it. Also, if they are getting a lot of reports, it may let them know there is a design issue that needs looking into. A lot of this aftermarket stuff is sold on recommendations and reputation (amongst other factors) and they aren't going to want any black eyes.

O_M_Jeep lubrication on the latch, if the latch is stiff, it'll work its way up slowly, if it's lubed well then it'll pop back down instead of working it's way up.

hbgirl Yikes! No advice on that particular carrier, but glad no one was near. Maybe search for reviews of it on Google and see if anything negative comes up?

So i almost killed somebody the other day

I have a smittybuild XRC bummer with the tire carrier. I turned the corner and it flew open like the pic below

Attachment 255468

I had not opened that in like a month so I have no idea why it did that but I was so lucky no one was next to me. Could you I again if a motorcycle would have been in the lane next to me. I could have killed someone. Any advice? This is the second time it has flown open. It just works itself lose somehow. I don't get it.
