|Hotenuf2||You are all a HUGE help--Thanks so much. I will let you know what turns out in case you are curious folk! lol I know I am. I am just the type of person that I feel not responsible, but horrible that it happened a week into buy from me you know. They know I would never have sold them something broken or in need of repair unless I stated such to a friend or stranger. Thanks again--and I shall return with what they had to do to fix the ole girl.|

|Teague242||On another note, How did the broken shaft make the brake system empty its fluid? I can see it doing that if it were a disk setup but how does this happen with drums?|

|darkproximity||Well if they took it mudding, then that's their fault for breaking it. A rear axle shaft only exists in one of two conditions, not broken, and broken. The rear axle is a c clip design, if the axle was broken before the sale, you'd have no power to the rear with an open or even limited slip differential, and eventually the shaft would come out with the wheel after being driven on, as it's doing now.|

|Hotenuf2||Just to clearify...We owned Jeep until a week ago---sold to friends son...then BAM! No lift, had bigger tires for awhile then back to stock size for fuel reasons. Again no off roading or rough driving. New engine 30k ago. Rear diff had a broken seal less than a year ago..fixed asap. Trying not to leave them hanging out to dry on the purchase but also knowing we had no issues that were not resolved by same mechanic for over 6 yrs.|

There aren't too many other problems it could be, default 2wd, power passes through the tcase to the rear output only. So either hes not actually in 2wd, theres no rear driveshaft, or a rear axle broke

Update, While driving to shop--brakes pretty much went out. So pulled over, totally out of fluid--which was full last weekend. Looks as if back Axle is coming off.
So my question is now..if Axle is out (broken?) is this something that can happen daily driving? It is 13 yrs old, but we stayed on top of repairs when needed. OR is it more likely to be a 4 wheeling issue? We never took it mudding--just knew we couldn't afford to break it. But our friends 18 yr old took it mudding just the other day. Not trying to place blame--just curious what you all think.

check to make sure you still have a rear driveline? (insert smackhead smiley here)
As far as 4wd linkage problems. One word. Novak. problem solved

Do you have a body lift? If so the linkage may not be adjusted properly.
If a previous owner had a body lift, adjusted the linkage and then removed the body lift that could cause issues too

|darkproximity||Have you gotten under and checked your transfer case linkage? Tjs have a wonky z linkage that can pop out and make the tcase not shift correctly|

2000 Wrangler-2WD stops working..
Driving along, stop at a light, put in 1st gear, nothing. Jeep is still running.
2nd gear-nothing. However, when I put in 4WD it engages and I can drive it.
This Jeep has not been in 4wd since Feb 2012, until just this last weekend where
it went mudding for the first time.
Has new engine 30k miles on it.
Anybody have any thoughts?? New Jeep owner.
