|dadsgoodlife||I just had a brake controller installed for $300 from a place that sells trailers. Craigslist is probably your best bet for a trailer. If you get a good deal, you could buy it, tow it to TN, then sell it when you get there. I did that with a van last summer to take the family on vacation.|

|mi1knc0okies||I moved up from NC to RI and plastic wrapped everything on my trailer because rain was in the forcast and used a tarp for the stuff in the back of my truck, had no problems. I did leave late afternoon and drove through the night.|

For what you are planning to do, a brake with hydraulic brakes that work based off of a sleeved tongue would be a fine option and actually work pretty well. It works well on my 4k# boat(don't normally tow it with the jk). The 6 speed doesn't hurt you as much as you think. The engine can pull the 2,000. On hills you need more gas but around town and highway isn't bad. You just rev higher.
For trailers you could look on Craigslist. There aren't many new trailers for 400-500. I only know of the harbor freight folding one. Its a good trailer but For a long distance move with a good amount of weight, you may want something a little larger or better.

Personally, I do not care too much for the inertial brakes but they work fine for smaller trailers.

Ok, so I have 3.21's so I guess my limit is 2,000lb, and I drive a 6-speed, so it seems that works against me, too?
I have the soft top on my Jeep at the moment, so I figure that would be an issue with U-Haul and I really don't wanna hassle with the hard top I have in storage just to pick up a trailer. I also figure I'd rather invest that $400-$500 I'd spend renting a U-Haul to just buy one for a bit more, if possible. Also, don't think I know anyone with a truck that could pick it up for me.
Don't know much about trailers and the like, so what do I want to look for in terms of brake controllers? And does anyone have any tips on businesses or unusual places to look to buy a trailer off someone or something?

The tie down legality depends on the states you drive through.
In NM, the load must be covered (tarp) to avoid a citation. I do not know how much stuff you are intending to load but my preference has always been a double axle trailer for better load distribution. Load the center of gravity over the wheels, not the front of the trailer. That is not necessarily intuitive to all but is necessary or you can easily exceed tongue weight.
Brake controllers are almost mandatory for the Jeeps. Otherwise stopping is an issue.

So the towing is based on your rear end gear ratio. A 3.21 is only rated at 2,000 for the 4 door and all other ratios for 4 doors are 3500#. 2 doors are always 2,000#. Some people tow more, but you assume liability for any issues
As far as getting a good trailer, why not just rent one from uhaul? They are cheap and have brakes which is nice. If you don't have a hard top and have a friend with a truck, see if he can pick it up and just switch it to your jeep at home
And most states have secure cargo laws. If stuff is dangerously mounted, that's illegal, but as long as its strapped securely its ok. With that, you can only stack stuff so high before its not safe. Bungees would be good to hold a tarp down, but they do not hold cargo down. I'd preferably use ratchet straps, or sinch straps, or a good rope at the very least

For all 2012-13 Sahara 4 doors, the tow limit is 2000 pounds for 3.21's, and 3500 for 3.73's regardless of tranny.
From 2007 to 2011, all auto's were rated at 3500, but many would recommend adding a cooler. I can't remember the ratings for the manuals.

I believe you need to have the 3.73 gears to tow up to 3500 lbs, I don't know what the limit is for 3.21. Could be the 2000 lbs you reference.
I don't know any other answers, but I would tell you that U-Haul will apparently not rent you a trailer to go behind a Wrangler unless you have a hard top. I don't know why, U-Haul have all sorts of weird and quirky rules.

I got a JKU Sahara recently and I'll be moving down to Nashville, TN from the NYC area. I want to hitch up a trailer to take all my stuff down rather than renting a truck or something similar. So, I have a few questions (some may be more related to trailer laws than the Jeep itself):
-How do I know what my JKU can handle towing weight-wise? I've seen 2,000lb thrown around and I've been told 3,500lb before, too.
-Any suggestions where to get a decent trailer or what type to use?
-Is it illegal to stack all of my stuff on an open trailer (utility, I think they're called?) and strap it all down via bungee or similar / cover it with a tarp and strap that down too, given that there's a tall ramp door toward the back to secure everything?
-Has anyone done something similar or a better idea? I'm trying to keep cost down and thinking I'll buy a trailer, rather than renting which will cost about four or five hundred anyway, since having a trailer would be handy and I could always turn around and sell it I'm guessing.
