Press the nav button to put the radio in Nav mode. Then press the menu button. You should see 5 option on the right, one of them is full screen. That should do it I believe.

I agree, these GPS units from the factory suck if you truely off road.

What hasn't been talked about is the cost to update your 430/730 maps. Garmin updates maps 4 times a year and I have lifetime updates (free) for my external GPS. I believe it costs about $70-$80 each time you want an update for your 430/730 and you have to bring your Jeep in. I just update my GPS from my computer at home, for free.

Also, I like to go off-roading a lot. That's why I bought my Jeep. I have books (i.e. from Charles Wells) that have backroads & 4-Wheel Drive Trails (CO, CA, AZ, MT, WY) that have GPS coordinates in them. I believe you can not just input GPS coordinates directly into the units, you would have to create a custom POI (CSV file), put it on a thumb drive, plug it in and then let the 430 read it in. Oh, you would have to convert the coordinates to decimal format before creating the POI. A lot of work.

Yes, some of the maps on your 430 will show forest roads, but not all of them. I was just up in Flagstaff, running the back FR roads. Even my external Garmin GPS had some of the roads ending when they didn't. I talked to a forest ranger and they gave me a map showing all the roads. They also showed me on the map where I could go online and download the 2013 FR roads for that area directly to my GPS. I did when I got home, went back up there, and everything was there. You can't do that on your 430.

Also, there are other ways to mount your external GPS, it doesn't have to go on the window. There are mounts for just about anywhere.

I looked and looked. Which menu specifically?
I remember finding a check box that sounded like it would turn that off, but it didn't do anything.

You can turn off the split screen if you go into the Nav menu. I like it and have it turned on, but if you don't like it you can turn it off and the map will stay full screen the whole time.

laollis hmmm.........I bought a brand new 430N to replace my 130, and it works perfectly. Dealer swapped them out for me for 33 bucks. Plug-n-play. Looks just like it came with that head unit.

Scott in Houston I'll just add that I got the 730 as well. I normally like oem Nav in my vehicles, but the 730 Nav SUCKS!

Horrid graphics... Horrid interface. When you program a destination and begin the drive, you cannot get rid of the upcoming turns on the right side of the screen so your map is now only half the screen. What a P.O.S.
The only thing I like is the traffic. It's usually accurate, but again, the graphics suck, so if it puts a construction icon on there, you can't see!

Hate the 730.

I wish I had gone aftermarket now. I thought the steering wheel inputs and having the Bluetooth and mic as factory would make up for it. It doesn't.

It depends on which unit you had. Remember, back in the day, even OEM units were laggy as hell. They were all cd/DVD based and with slow drives to boot. They then switched to HDD drives and got faster. Now they are all flash based with pretty powerful processors and are very fast. Alpine is still the benchmark by which ALL navigations are judged. Alpine also makes the best OEM navigation units (Acura and Lexus). Technology today has gotten extremely good and is extremely cheap. The pioneer I posted above works with conjunction with your iPhone and is an incredible unit (provided you have and use an iPhone). It has the latest maps, is capable of running Gaia offroad topo maps, and everything your phone is capable of running, including inclineometers, Bluetooth obd2 gauges, etc. I love OEM units but the wrangler options (I have the 730) aren't my favorite. I think I like the 430 better honestly. I hear the new units (like the ones on the new Grand Cherokee) are much better.

I had a Pioneer unit in my old truck, and I would not piss on that thing if it was in fire. It was laggy, froze occasionally, had crappy maps, poor Bluetooth sound, etc. My 430n cost less than I paid for the Pioneer and is a much better unit, and it utilizes steering wheel controls and has factory warranty.

At the time I bought, I thought the Kenwood was rated one of the best on the market. It was a complete letdown.

rcosika When I ordered my '10 JK Sport, I really wanted the MyGig for the NAV and HDD (almost no aftermarket units had a built in HDD). Anyway, the price from Jeep was way to much, so I passed. I immediately purchased a refurbished unit for a fraction of the price and swapped it in myself (along with a top quality GPS antenna and microphone).

I absolutely LOVE the in-dash unit. It is by no means flawless (the music management software is only fair, IMHO), but the GPS/NAV system is dynamite. I haven't updated the maps yet, but after three years, it has never failed to get me where I wanted to go!

In the end, warranty coverage was only of minimal concern, and my unit still works like new. In fact, with all the upgrades that I've added to my Jeep (and the ones that are still planned), I wish I would have gotten more of a base model to build upon. Hindsight is always 20/20, I guess!

So, that's my story anyway...I hope that helps!

Increased in quality? I have owned aftermarket units for the last decade (now have a 730 which I kind of regret) and as long as you get the top brands you are good. The brands are Alpine and Pioneer. Both brands make fantastic units.

That's pretty slick looking. Have these types of units increased in quality the last few years? We had a Kenwood 7100DNX in my wifes old Honda Odyssey.....It was a heap of trash.

Are you hellbent on an OEM unit? You can get a VERY nice aftermarket unit that will function seamlessly and cost less.

This is exactly why I went with a Garmin 2757. 7" GPS for $219 on my Oscar Mike with lifetime map upgrades...... The wife has the 430N in her Sahara, and I have to say, I love the 2757 (even if window mounted) just as much, if not more. Hell, we have to pay to upgrade the maps on the 430N. UGH!

I have Connectivity Group so have all the same functionality as the wifes Sahara, just not GPS in the dash.

The problem is that the 430N simply isnt available on the Sport unless you have the dealer install it. I'm guessing a dealer will charge $1200 or so to install a 430N.

Even on the Sahara and Rubi, it is a $975 factory option...and that is the invoice price.

yacc Uhmm, imho, if you want Nav and Bluetooth, get it factory installed. It has a warranty, and it works well. My F150, I got an aftermarket Nav+BT system, and regretted it since day 1, despite having over $1000 in it. The 430N in my Jeep works as well as the system in my wife's Lincoln, though the Nav screen is not as sharp. To clarify it, no it is not. From the factory you can only order the Nav in the Sahara and Rubi. It was one of the things that pushed me to the Sahara over the Sport S. As panthermark mentioned, you can add them after the fact if you order the connectivity package on the Sport S. That will make a 430N Nav or 430 rbz non nav a complete plug and play deal.

Not too many people are concerned about a 5 or 6 or 7 year old nav system when buying a used vehicle......mostly because they are much harder to upgrade and update than a hand held unit, and outside technology is outpacing the hard wired systems.

Look at how fast, smart, cheap, and powerful phones, GPS units and tablets have gotten in the past 5 or 6 years.

However, I do understand the benefit of having a large screen built into vehicle.

panthermark You can get a 430N off of ebay or a forum member and install it. As mentioned earlier, and also mentioned in the 430rbz thread. If you have the right options installed on your Sport (Connectivity, Sat), and get the right 430N unit, it is 100% plug and play. It will take you 20 minutes to install yourself.

nitroz680 fair point about the warranty, but i wouldnt so much call it an aftermarket install. If you follow those other threads that I eluded to, they basically recommend taking a chrysler product and putting it into the jeep.

i.e. a 430N unit from a town and country or a 430RBZ unit from a dodge ram etc.

Don't forget that the price you pay at the dealer also includes warranty on the whole system. What happens when the ebay system you buy craps out a few months after install? Also, nothing is better for resale then factory upgraded equipment right on the sticker, nobody wants to see receipts of aftermarket audio equipment when buying your used vehicle.
