mmbrock77 I've had two of these tops (both bought on Ebay). The first one only lasted about 3 months. The stitch holes on the top bar started tearing away and I could see daylight through them. The back window zipper also messed up. The 2nd one I've had on for about a year now and a few months back the back zipper messed up again. I guess for the money it's not too bad. Unfortunately I live in south Alabama where it rains every afternoon, so the back seat stays wet. Good luck with yours! Watch that back zipper and you'll be fine.

I have the Best Top Sail cloth top. Same issue. Looked at many other jeeps with replacement tops and saw the same thing. Installed my brother-in-laws Smittybuilt top with the same results. Doesn't leak, no wind noise above standard, so I can live with it.

DermJeep I have the same issue with the windshield frame fitment - looks out of place, but i don't get any leaks. Doesn't bow out until you tighten down the cam latches. I've had one of these on for a while and my only complaint is that some of the velcro on the rear windows (which don't zip up for rear passengers, only remove) is losing some stick.

I have black denim and generally like it, especially for the price. Windows haven't scratched too bad, nor have they yellowed too much from UV damage (it stays parked outside). Tint was a good choice.

steveo8x8 +1 on this top. I love it! Very quiet on the highway and not a single problem with it. Windows still look brand new and had it for over 1 year now. Would buy again without even thinking about it.

tec498 I've had this top for a year and a half now. It's great, better than the top that came on my Jeep used.

Vega_02TJ I will try that, thanks.

All you have to do is when you put you top back on get the latches hooked on the window but don't clamp it shut. Before you clamp then shut step up on your door wedge and push it under evenly with your hand then just close it. it will look fine takes about 2 extra mins. That's what I do to mine and it looks good.

wranglerTX I dont have that problem, you should check the warranty.

This is what I'm thinking, isn't only 45degrees in the garage and it looks like it needs to be pulled side to side from center out.
If all of the stitching and everything is in place and it's just not fitting snug at the windshield I'd see if you could claim it under warranty as a manufacturers defect? I know a lot of folks bad mouth Smittybilt, but I've heard some good things about their warranties...

I am not sure if SB even has a black diamond but I have heard, at least on Besttop Softtops, the black diamond is better.

Vega_02TJ Mine just came in today. I'm sure the old one is OE. All the stitching has rot and is fraying. A while back I blew out the back zipper. So if my new SB looks as good as WranglerTX's with no major fitment issues I'll be happy.

necromancer_tat I've had my Smittybilt soft top for several months now and it still looks and works great! Best $250 I've spent on my Jeep yet!

Reaper0726 So i just got done installing my smittybuilt top. Same one as pictured... however, I have to say... getting the half windows onto the factory frames is a stunt. Left them sitting by the fire for the better part of an hour, snapped one shoe horn in half. Ended up using a crowbar to get the corners on. Top looks fantastic for 250 but man... those windows!

ae5dw I also have a new Smittybilt soft top. It was a PITA to install when right out of the box until I let it sit in the sun. Now after a few weeks of letting it sit on the Jeep I have no issues putting it up or down and the windows are no problems at all. I also love the tinted windows. I bought the upper door skins for my half doors. Again, the sun is your friend with the install.
11-08-2011 10:56 PM
wranglerTX yes, the sun will help. It will stretch the soft top.
11-08-2011 08:50 PM
Jeep Rook I'll try that... Thanks
11-08-2011 07:12 PM
TXST8tj ^^^ if you haven't yet, let it sit out in the sun (hot/warm) for a couple hours and try again. it just might need to loosen up a bit.

Jeep Rook I recently bought this top for an '01 TJ. Most of the installation was a breeze until I got to zipping up all 3 removable windows. I don't remember having this much trouble with the factory top when it was new. Any advice on getting a little stretch without busting zippers. All 3 only go to the 90 degree turns.

ZZR_JOE A friend of mine bought this same exact top off of Ebay about 4 months ago and it still looks brand new and he hasn't had any problems with it.

Chris65GMC My jeep came with Smitty built soft top, I'm not sure how old it is, but the quality seems decent. Better than what I would expect considering the bad reviews SB gets around here. My only problem is the zipper in the back window is not great, but it was broken when i got the jeep so not sure what the PO did.

Long story short, I would consider buying another SB top if the besttop was out of my price range.

400 for a besttop? I thought they were closer to $800?
08-04-2011 10:39 PM
GoldenSahara00 Humph, I think that is the soft top I own.... interesting.
