|Ifixyawata||It's one of the ones that doesn't have a Schraeder valve on the fuel rail. Being that I'm not in a position to spend $50 on an adapter just to be able to measure fuel pressure is there anything else I can check?|

Ok, I don't usually like to resurrect threads but my issue doesn't really warrant a new one. Regarding my wife's '97 TJ 2.5; I had started the process of diagnosing a no-start condition and I had determined successfully that it's getting spark.
I moved on to the step-by-step (as mentioned above) of diagnosing the fuel pump. First off I did it myself and had my neighbor listen, too, and there is no audible sound coming from the tank. The fuel pump isn't making any noise at all, that I can hear. I did the relay switch-around and determined that the fuel pump relay was good. I got back to the harness connector at the tank and realized I've misplaced my multimeter. Being that it's almost time for me to leave for work, I hooked the harness back together and, just to see, I tried to start it once again. A few times it might have fired once or twice and then went back to just cranking over. I tried once while holding down the accelerator and it started, rand and idled fine.
My question is, should I still continue to diagnose this? Is it still possible that the fuel pump is bad? Could I have a pump that's only working some of the time? Just low fuel pressure? To make sure I wasn't crazy I pulled the fuel pump relay out while it was running and it started dying within a second or two.

|j33p3rz cr33p3rz||Well today I noticed it took the jeep about 3 to 5 secs to start.Its been firing rite up.Is this normal?It happened after I took it for a ride then it sit an hour then it happened. Other than that seems to be fine.|

Go get a big strap wrench today to make tonight's job much easier. The fuel pump is held down into the gas tank by a big plastic/nylon lock ring which isn't easily removed without a strap wrench. Lowes, Home Depot, etc. will have them in the bigger size needed in their plumbing departments, I never saw any big enough in their tool departments.
You can see how large that lock ring is in the below picture, it's that big white ring.

|Jerry Bransford||Unless your TJ is a very basic stripped down model, your gas tank is very likely the 19 gallon version. Few actually came with the 15 gallon tank.|

I just ordered a sending unit from amazon. It cost me 145.00.
the fuel pump alone as almost that much anywhere else.
I got the spectra premium sending unit.
I have an old sending unit that needs a new filter, could sell it to you
it works but no guarantee's on how long. It has 89k miles on it

Here is a picture of the connector
The red tab in the middle of the connector locks the two halves together. Push it to one side to unlock. It will only push one way. I personally would verify that the pump is getting power before dropping the tank. When you unplug the connector, you can pull the harness out of the clips that hold it and you will have enough slack to pull it out from under the jeep. It makes it a hell of a lot easier to test that way. Find the black wire and the green wire with a yellow stripe. Those are your ground and positive, respectively. connect the leads from your multimeter or test light to them and turn the key on. You should get 12+ volts for 2 to 3 seconds.

|Jerry Bransford||The only electrical plug that connects through the gas tank skidplate on the driver's side is for the fuel pump. Push on it to make sure the plug is solidly seated & if the fuel pump doesn't turn on then off after that when you cycle the ignition switch on, odds are good the fuel pump itself is bad.|
