livenlearn I haven't done much more to my jeep since that last time I posted except use it. I was down in Tenn. For the winter and it was extremely useful. Most of the roads where I was were dirt and some so rough that it was pretty much a jeep only trail. The basic OBA system I installed on the jeep has been so useful I don't know what I would have done without it. I even did an on the trail or I guess, on a Tenn. road, repair of a gashed tire for somebody one evening about 12 miles from the nearest house on a rough back road. Here are some photos of what I put it through, although I hardly had a camera with me so it went through much more from hauling logs to furs to fording creeks and blazing trails and unfortunately it pulled though without the use of the winch.(sadly) although I did break the drivers side front spring mount. I ended up buying a truck down in Tenn. And the jeep got a ride home.

livenlearn I'll be leaving for a while because of lack of access to the internet where I am traveling too. I might update if I find some internet but it might be few a far between. I should be back for the summer.

I see, the Cherokee forum, not just the Cherokee section of the jeep forum. That is another good thread which sparked more ideas on heat resistant outlet hoses. I'll have to keep my eyes open for hydraulic hoses. They have pretty extreme ratings such as 5000 psi in a temp range of -40 to 212 and I know the hoses we worked with at work had a rating of 20,000 psi. (where I worked up until a month ago we made all our own hoses for the equipment we built. Just missed the boat on that one. Although I could swing in there sometime and see. I doubt they'd say no.)

I didn't do much of a write up on building it which I probably won't get around to doing anytime soon. I was over on probably the same thread on Jeepforum the other day when I was building mine. Fantastic thread over a period of years. I'll link to it here for future people looking for more info. Since there isn't much I could find over here.


This is a great build thread for those wanting this OBA (on board air) setup.

Yes your post in the daily thread is what sent me in here looking for details. Figured I would rather comment in here than get off topic in that thread too much. I found a good writeup on the cherokeeforum with details on exactly how to do it. I look forward to doing it.

I used amber/yellow LED light strips from AutoZone but since the light housings I used were amber I probably could have used white as well. They can be cut into three strips which I then scraped off the coating from the copper strips and soldered a set of wires to each strip. I used a dremel tool and cutoff wheel to open the light housings and glued the lights in and sealed everything back up with hot glue. I could have used silicone which probably would have been better in the long run but didn't.

Thanks. I did re-plumb the compressor to flow better than my first setup and to allow for larger hoses for air tools sometime later. When I feel like spending more money I'll work on a oil separator, manifold, and a lube system for the compressor. For now this will keep me from getting stranded with a flat.

livenlearn We'll I haven't left yet because I am waiting on some mail so I have been still working on the jeep. Yesterday I put EQUAL in my tires and was very pleased with how it rode afterwards. In the process, I pulled my rear drums and saw that my rear brakes were shot. Put some new brake shoes in and put it all back together. Need to adjust them yet but I'm hoping this will decrease my stopping distance. I also got some pictures of things I have done lately.

Got my CB installed. I would like to get it looked at by someone who knows what they are doing but for now it checks out alright on the SWR meter so I'll leave it. I am able to pick up plenty of chatter on the air so it does work. It is a Cobra 29 LX LCD display radio with a Wilson 4ft antenna. Attachment 691657 Attachment 691665 I finally got some pictures of my homemade LED side marker/turn signal fender lights. I was a little concerned how bright they would be but they turned out perfect. Single line of lights is the marker and the double line is the turn signal. I built them from a stock replacement light housings that I cut the back out of and glued these light strips into. They are trim-able so I cut them into three sections and wired them up separately. They turned out great. I'm hoping I sealed them up well enough for their location. Attachment 691617 Attachment 691625 I have had this center console in for a little while but just haven't gotten around to pictures. This is the Tuffy deluxe 8inch wide console with the locking radio slot. I haven't gotten to putting my radio in it yet but I can't wait till I can change the radio station without leaning across the jeep. I like the hight but the cushion is a little to far back in a manual with the cup holders attached. The construction is done very well and is made from pretty heavy gauge steal. The latch is very heavy duty and latches down or locks with a key. I am very happy with the cup holders. I haven't had any water bottle fall out of them yet. I haven't tried a mug in it yet though. Attachment 691633 Attachment 691641 Attachment 691649 I hooked up OBA (on board air) using my unused AC pump. These pumps are rated around 8 or so cfm so they put out a impressive amount of air. The only problem is that the lubrication was mixed in with the freon so just running dry air though it will wear it out. I hooked it up for emergency use with what I had sitting around. It pumps tires up but I need to increase the hose size and hook up a tank. This is a work in progress. Attachment 691673

livenlearn I haven't updated much on here but I have been working on the jeep. The rear license plate light is wired up, it has a larger spare tire, the spare tire carriers third mount is done, I have a working CB, the center console is installed, and I have inboard air. I have also done little things like hook up breather tubs for my axles and transfer case, adjusted the cold idle settings and choke, and leveled the drivers seat. I will try to get some pictures and go into more detail here shortly. I may not get to it because I'm leaving on a trip Monday and where I'm going there isn't internet unless I find a wifi somewhere.

LED side markers and turn signals. The single line in the center is the marker and the two bars are the turn signal. Interested in how they look on the jeep. Not sure how bright they will be but comparing them to another LED marker light I have, it looks good.

I was a little concerned with running that tire but I had the front axle disconnect disconnected so I knew it wouldn't overwork my diff. It drove like normal but I am still looking for a 32 inch tire to replace it with. It is a blast. Not sure if I'll ever get tired of working on it.

YJmaddness My bad. I looked at the snow photos and it looked grey. Nothing wrong with black either!

YJmaddness I like the grey color on your Yj. That tire looked like is should wobble and squeak like one of those busted shopping cart wheels. (Making the noises In my head. ) glad it got you home.

livenlearn Was yesterday and today but I drilled out the last broken off bolt on the jeep, installed a larger heater motor, put in some good used wiper linkage (my wipers actually work correct now), changed the oil, drilled the drain holes in the replaced drivers side floor, installed a tuffy center console, worked on installing the upper pivot for the swing out tire carrier, and installed some Savvy offroad led tail lights. Pretty successful weekend I'd say. I then took it driving in the snow and had some hairy moments going over the mountains in 2 wheel drive but it was a blast. The car behind me gave me more room when I had to use the whole road to get the jeep going the the right direction again. Found a car wash for a dry place to lay and pulled the vacuum actuator cover off the front axle and engaged 4 wheel drive for the drive home. Really made a difference in climbing the mountains. That is one thing I still need to do, mount a front axle disconnect on the dash.

livenlearn My LED tail lights came in. The order was missing a lens but that is being remedied. Billeted aluminum machined housings with LED lens and side marker.

You may have noticed in the pictures that my front passenger side tire got progressivly low and by the time I made it back down it wasn't something I wanted to drive on so I threw on my dumb little spare. I really need to get a full size spare. It didn't take me long I was was on my way again. (it is so nice when you have all the tools on hand)

livenlearn Thanks for the compliments guys. It has been a blast and I will probably never really finish the jeep. I can't leave anything alone.

I have been promising some pictures and today I went out with my camera and took some pictures, decided to take it down the road a little for the fun of it and ended up driving the ridge of Blue mountain on the Game Land trails. They are open for travel for hunting season and I took full advantage. Nothing hardcore, just scenic dirt track wheeling. Here are some pictures I took.

livenlearn Today I dropped the fuel tank and fixed the leaks plus cleaned up the fuel sender unit and got that working better. Also put the extra strength straps for the rear bumper on. Didn't end up getting any pictures before dark though. Relocated my licence plate but haven't hooked up the plate light yet. Will need to run some wiring for the CB antenna and center console so will try to wire that up then.
