I'm no lift expert, but my first mod intending to do some moderate and occasional wheeling was better rails for the Rubicon and some skid plates. If you're rock crawling, I would say skid plates are a must, esp for the oil pan and diff cover. For the rails, I went the Ace route and kept the Rubicon rails, and don't have a single complaint.

A few questions about lifting that I am still confused about:
I have seen the diagrams and but I still do not understand them about "backspacing". I would prefer not to use a spacer, that is why I am thinking about the kit and wheels below...
I have on order a Rubicon HR 2dr 6sp. I want to do rock crawling with it on the weekends. But also use it during the week as a DD. I want to add a winch and larger tire carrier in the back.
I want to swap out the wheel for the AEV Pintler Wheels (Black).
I would like to run 35" tires, but I am will to consider a smaller size. I want to use the Metal Cloak JK Wrangler Game-Changer Suspension, 2.5"/3.5", ARB Edition. Either 2.5 or 3.5 inch kits, the one thing that I some what afraid of with a 3.5 inch kit it won't fit in my garage.
When you "order" that lift kit it asks: Backspacing? Wheels have more than 5.5" of backspacing or less than 5.5" of backspacing. There is where my understanding of backspacing is nil!
My understanding the MC Lift kits keep the same geometry of the stock set up and AEV wheels and they have JK specific offset. I am thinking this through correctly or am I way off base?
Also with the 3.5" lift kit you would recommend drive shafts?? And if so which brand? (haven't done any research on them yet)
Would it be better to load up with jeep with winch, rock rails and tire carrier first before lifting?
I you guys think I need to do more research just say so... Which I am doing anyways...

Just put on a Metalcloak 3.5 dual rate ARB kit with 35s on my 2013 jku. Took it wheeling here in Colorado mountains where I live and it works so good on and off road. Driveshaft will be the next step. Already ordered a Tatton 1310. My intention was to get the 2.5 but they put the 3.5 by mistake but I'm glad because I like it a lot. Putting on an aftermarket driveline is not going to be quite as big a deal as I thought it would be.

I have read and re read pretty much everything I could find on the forum, and finally pulled the trigger on the Rancho Sport 2" lift.
Rides nice. Looks great. Works well with my current 33s but will have room for the 35s if they are in my future.
I'm looking forward to the first off road run this weekend ...

If you plan on running the stock fenders then I would suggest some bump stops to limit the amount of travel and avoid the tires making contact. You can scrape by with the 2.5" kit on 35's but the added weight of the bumpers might cause some problems whenever you hit a bit of flex. You might actually rub going over train tracks or steep driveways. Just something to keep in mind.

There's a lot of great info in this thread fellas. I have a JKUR with a LOD armor lite front bumper and a 10A rear bumper. I'm pretty settled on the Teraflex 2.5" coil lift with Bilstein 5100s. I'm going to run 35" Duratecs. My question is what else should I get that doesn't come with the kit? I know I need the exhaust spacer. It's my daily driver and doesn't see much more than the occasional fire road.

Thanks Lou. Knowing I can improve as I go is a big deal for my budget and lifestyle. My Jeep was stored for years shortly after purchase. This is my second user on here. Manual X, 28,013 miles, only been run the last 2 years. Rather than buy new, go in debt, and still not have what I need, I am completely rebuilding from ground up. Life is a lot more fun when you don't have big payments! So much info to absorb that it will give you a nose bleed. I can find info for on road use, at least partial, or beasts, nothing in between, which is where I fall. I was getting pretty frustrated not finding the info I need, but thanks to this thread I have a start. I based height and tire size on experience. I drive on old contour strips, mountaintop removal sights, valley fills, sippy holes, hills, back roads and in the woods 3 - 6 days a week. Clearance is needed. Unless I cut the fenders, AKA gravel catchers, a 2.5" with 35s does rub on this terrain. 4+" is the norm here, too tall for me. After a lifetime of trucks, I wish I had of gotten a Jeep sooner.

The Jeep looks great Terrabit, enjoy.
I like this "lifting in steps" idea because its a great economical approach that slowly introduces you to Jeep Modding. As you progress, you'll realize what works for you and what doesn't. If on the other hand, you don't want to bother with progressional improvements and would prefer to go straight with the entire kit, then I would consider either Metal Cloak or Rock Krawler. They are both really well suited for predominantly off-road Jeeps. I tend to favor Metal Cloak a bit more personally for several reasons but you might find RK to be a better fit for you. I would start with that approach first.

I am more confused than ever!!!! I am not grasping all of this. I have an 07 2 door, 29,000 miles, 80% plus off road use, some very rough, lots of rocky roads and hills. Thought I knew what I wanted, TF 1256202, but I may have to add more $ and may not achieve my desired 3-3 1/2 inch lift with full weight is added. I find that MK has an upgradable kit with springs that will improve handling, and I can use my stock shocks until Nov (anniversary gift) but I will get so much height I would end up paying extra $$$. And it seems everyone has a different idea on what needs added and when. ARGGGG!!!!! I thought a $2000 budget would get me a decent, usable completed kit to run up to 35 inch tires. I am used to old pickups that if you gut them, you just go to the junkyard for replacements. My brain is dead from all of the reading! Please Help?

So Matador is it safe to say that the AEV Dualsport XT 2.5” is my best bet for a 2014 JKU that will be doing 100% city and freeway? Will I need anything else keeping in mind that it will not off road? Will run 35" and aftermarket wheels, probably aftermarket bumpers to.
On our previous 2010 JKU we went all the way on a 4" lift kit, it was a mix of OME, long arms, adjustable everything and we hated it. The kit was around $2500...It was like driving a boat on the road... we want to make sure it doesn't happen again

Put together some stuff I had and some stuff I ordered. Some of you know I was pretty unhappy with my RK lift on my JKR. It got better with time and replacing the RK stuff. This time (and it is a 4-door) I went with 3" Synergy springs, AEV drop brackets, Rancho 9000 XL shocks, etc. The ride is night and day (better). I may just switch shocks to the 5100s and see what it does but the Synergy coils and Rancho 9000 XL shocks, along with the AEV brackets, are fantastic.
This pic is not the best- the white makes the dark tires/wheels/asphalt blend in on the phone. Glad I went with the 3" coils.

Sir Matador, first, thank you for your contributions. I read lots of stuff on this site and others and always appreciate what you have to say.
I have a 13' JKUR auto on 35" Toyo MTs with a 2.5" TF coil lift and track bar. Still using the stock Rubi shocks with TF extensions and the bump stops that came in the kit. It drives fine but I'd like to increase the travel a bit - I'd like to chuck the extra bumpstop if I can. Can I do that with the right shocks and cut fenders? I understand I'd get more down travel with MC or synergy springs.

|mittenman||Thanks Matador, if I decide to go with Metal Cloak how long can I reasonably expect to drive without subjecting the other component to excessive wear before upgrading? The jeep is a manual transmission Rubicon so should have the 4.10 gear ratio.|

You want something that can clear 35's, work with factory wheels, comfortable for city driving and capable for occasional off-roading... all while keeping the price down.
Believe it or not you have a very common wish list. If your on a budget, I would suggest lifting your Jeep in steps like I described, starting with a Teraflex leveling kit. Its not going to handle better but if you chop your fenders it will clear 35's.
If you want to invest some more money than you will want to look at kits with at least a 2.5" lift. I personally like Metal cloak, their dual rate spring system seems to fit your city comfort requirement while giving you great articulation off-road.

|mittenman||I recently bought a 2007 JKU Rubicon that I want to put 35' tires on. I had an 03" TJ a few years back that I put an OME lift on and 33" tires. I had the stiffer suspension kit with tire carrier and bumper on the back but stock fron bumper with half doors and soft top. The ride was firmer on city roads than I wanted but handled great doing light off roading. After reading thru this whole thread I have no idea what to put on JKU? I was leaning towards the TF lift but the Jeep has brand new tires and I cannot afford new wheels rright now. I want a suspension lift that will give me 2.5"-3" will work with factory wheels and be used primarily for in town driving. I want to minimize parts wear and have great handling around town with some upgrade in occasional off roading. What is the best lift to do that while keeping price down? Any ideas from the more experienced members is greatly appreciated.|

Just thinking out loud here. Current setup is the TF 2.5" coil lift with Bilstein 5100's and 315 Duratracs..
Plan is to eventually add bumbers and winch. I know the TF coils are soft enough that I will lose some height. So now the brainstorm starts...
1. Add just enough spacer to get it back to current height(shouldn't need add'l parts)
2. Upgrade to Metal cloak 2.5" springs because the get nearly 3.5" without added weight(may need track bar and control arms here)
3. Go up to 3.5" Metal cloak springs for badassery factor(will definately need the TB's and CA's here with possiblity of high steer kit)
What say the experts???
