McDaniel274 Giving my 2cents on this, I purchased an 03 Tj with the 3.9l 4bt cummins, pervious owner had down the swap and all the fabrication work I've but over 15000 miles on it since i've owned it it has 4in lift 33in tires axles are the d30/d35 nv3550 tranny and the engine has oversized injectors pumped turned up H1c turbo putting out around 250hp and over 500+ft/lbs of torque. I was looking to purchase a Tj and eventually do this conversion but I stumbled upon this build and paid the same as what a 03 gas wrangler with the amount of add on's was going for about 12g. Total miles with conversion is about 40,000 miles the only "breakdown" I've had in 15000miles was the rear pinning seal went out going down the interstate and eventual smoked the outer bearing but other than that I'm extremely happy with it and the recommend it if you had the time and money to invest on it

TheTJRod From what I'm finding out about this engine(OM602.982) is the fuel injection & emission system is electronically controlled. Now not knowing much of anything of mercedes systems. You might have to swap over a lot of electronic modules to run the engine. Normally will have to bring over the entire emissions system as well or the computer will be showing a "check engine" light all the time, run very poorly, or fail to run at all.

That is a question for your uncle. Maybe he will help tell you what all you would need to transfer to run the engine.

The OM602 replaced the OM617. Also ask him if he has a OM617 turbo engine. This is proven to work in the TJ and you can get engine mounts and a conversion kit to use your current transmission and transfercase.

Alexmx Thank you for you'r effort.

I'm was thinking abaut Mercedes E290 TD... But I don't know what is most important for wranglers engine.
MERCEDES BENZ E-Klasse (W210) 290 Turbodiesel - 1995, 1996, 1997, 1998, 1999
I prefer Mercedes because my uncle was working with Mercedes and he already have some engines at home.

In my country, Slovenia, is no problem with the homologation. An also diesel is much cheaper than gas.

My guess is you're hoping a diesel swap will get you better mileage. You're looking at thousands to do the swap, and with diesel fuel being more expensive than gas you're not going to be able to drive enough miles to make up the difference.

Spending money on a wrangler to get it more fuel efficient is a waste as you would rarely ever come out ahead in the long run. Most claims by products are marketing tricks. But if you're doing it to get a diesel and all the low end torque that comes with it that is a different story. I have read of a few mercedes diesel engine swaps but I believe the most popular/common ones are with the cummins 4bt and the isuzu 4bd

You got to give me more info on what mercedes year and engine to get more specs but here are a ton of specs on the engines.
A little Mercedes diesel engine info I found

Overall unless you like a project and have a few thousand or more to do the swap right then more power to you. I have researched a lot into putting a 4bt or 4bd in mine but I need to increase my engine knowledge and will only do it when my 4.0L starts getting weak.

One last note. There are a lot of states that only allow you to swap in an engine from a same model year or newer so if you're looking at that 1985 diesel engine in the junkyard to put in your TJ it might not even be legal.

Alexmx hei, I bought TJ 98 4.0... I am wondering if it is possible to swap jeeps engine with an engine from other brand. (as Mercedes C 250d) In purpose to reduce fuel consumption.?

Scout19 Thanks for all the advice guys!

Green LJRub Get a GM 5.3 engine and trans out of a 99+ GM truck/SUV and don't look back. The 4L60 is a great transmission. Novac sells an adapter so you can use your transfercase. I'm searching for a Trailblazer 5.3 to swap into my Jeep. The Trailblazer has the aluminum version of the 5.3, and are 90lbs lighter then the 4.0L! Its 295hp and 330lb ft

So, what would be a good (fuel injected) 350 and auto tranny choice for Scout19?

kshaws21 I love the sound of a four barrell kicking in as much as the next guy, but I would never at this point in my life intentionally install a carbed engine in my Jeep. Plenty of fuel injected crate engines avail these days, even if it will require a more intricate install and setup.

Scout19 Thanks guys. My 2.5 is fine just wanting a little more spunk. So TJRod my best bet would go with a lets say 350 carbed and an auto tranny. What's a good tranny for that setup?

How many miles do you have. An engine that is taken care of can go 300k. Sounds like you are thinking on something that is not necessary.

yoopone I paid $2300 for my ATK including shipping.

XJ tranny is clocked different at the t-case, so you may want to address that too....so the t-case isn't pointed down to the ground...

You will pretty much have to swap in the whole harness and computer. There would be less to do swapping in a V8 and a manual or non computer controlled auto.

wwch99tj I did mine myself so no labor charges... I think after putting in new clutch, water pump, thermostat and such I had $1700 in the swap...?
05-26-2013 08:05 PM
Dobber91 What were the prices on the engines you guys put back in? Not including labor.

wwch99tj I put in a "surefire" reman engine from autozone 2yrs ago 35k on it now with no problems...

I put an ATK in my 97 2 years ago. It runs flawlessly. Quiet and smooth!
