Take the old cables off and measure their resistance with an OHM-meter or digital multimeter ($9 from Harbor Freight, even less with a coupon).
Now measure the resistance of the new cables you just bought (make sure they are the EXACT same length as the old ones).
Are the numbers significantly different? I highly doubt it.

|Water Dog||If you're in to making your own battery cables, consider going to a welding shop and buying bulk wire. Usually all the big sizes are available from about #4 to 4/0 and it is very flexible. It is made of more individual strands, so it can handle more amperage with less loss. Most will even crimp on ends for you.|

|IcarusLSC||Did you mention the alt wires to James? I got the circuit breaker kit from him for $45 extra, I received 4g wires for the alt and fuse panel, a resetable circuit breaker, and the 2/0 for the main battery power and grounds. Wicked overkill imho... just the way I like it|

The guy wants low ohm wires. nothing wrong with that.
Make double sure you clean your battery terminals with a terminal cleaner and spray your terminals with some pink/red terminal protector. Mine were seized / corroded together too. It took some work to get them apart.
do your big 3. trace the wires, use good wire. Solder the connections and use some coating to keep crud out and off of them. Take the better wires over the cheap ones.

I will be doing the 'big 3 upgrade' soon as well. The 3 grounds are over 16 years old, there is some serious dry rot inside the wires and it sure couldn't hurt to change em. Take a look at the 2 cables coming off your negative battery terminal and follow them down to your engine block and firewall. Also follow the wire coming off your alternator to your battery.
You do routine maintenance on everything else in your vehicle why would you tolerate any other lower performing part that could leave you stranded when it does finally go? The difference in upgrading/refreshing these components would most easily be explained by comparing a set of quality high end jumper cables to a cheap set. One recharges much faster allows more energy to pass through with less interference and the other barely works but does get the job done. You could very well see an improvement in any/all of your accessories as well your on board computers/sensors.

|EnglishBulldog1||Got my cables today! Only thing is it does not come with alternator to batt. The guy from Jeepers said it was due to the fact a fuse was built in. Is there any merit to that? I kinda want a heavier cable. Also any tips on how to get the negative cables grounds loose?|

|IcarusLSC||Make your own, or Jeepersandcreepers.com has some nice cables if you don't want to make them. Very heavy duty from them (2/0G mains and 4G alt and fuse panel!) They also have the military style battery clamps which I would never do without now. They made them cheaper than I could buy the materials and crimpers myself, fwiw...|

It's called the "big 3" upgrade. I did it to my jeep after having done it on my old F150 and I can't really say it did much. At idle i get about 14.7v. The alternator output is controlled by the computer.
Oh and I used 0/1 gauge wire that I got at the local car audio shop.

|n00g7||Recommended cable size is based on power utilized/produced, i.e., by your starter/alternator. So, unless their power requirements grew (which they didn't if all you installed was a new battery), no need to change the cables.|

|EnglishBulldog1||I know that, but I am wondering that a thicker gauge going from alternator to fuse box then to battery and finally to starter will increase power. When I had to get a aftermarket positive cable when mine sized on my old battery, the cable from battery to fuse was more then half the size.|

I am in the process of wiring up my winch, and I was thinking of upgrading my cables from the alternator to battery battery to fuse panel. And the same for ground. Hoping newer cables with lower OMH couldn't hurt. I have already had to buy a new battery to starter cable be cause the terminal was sized on the old battery. Ideas?
