my first one i ran unbalanced and had no issues (i dont do much highway driving though)

my 2nd one they balanced after they put a new short end on it. i forgot to tell them not to.

after reading this thread, i might try it on my own next time....

78cj7 Bolts for the output on the tcase and as far as the output for the axle u bolts and nuts are stronger than bolts and straps.

atomicjoe23 No problem with the welding. . .I'm just about finished with my Welding Technology ATA. . .just one quarter left (have to finish up my TIG training. . .) but I'm done with MIG and I have a Millermatic 211 (just have to go buy the stuff put my 250V outlet in. . .I keep tripping the breaker on the oultet I have now. . .it's only a 15 amp, would be nice if it was a 20A, but the 250V will be using a double pole 50A breaker so I won't have ANY problems after that!!!).

78cj7 Not my thread Atomic, but you are welcome just the same. I make my own driveshafts ever since i came across that thread a few years ago. It is really pretty easy especially if you are a good welder.

. . .if that was your thread it was a great write-up, good pic's on it and I liked the driveshaft clamp using the square tubing. . .not a bad idea for a DS stand in the pic's either. . .too bad those caster wheels aren't perfectly round or you could just true the DS up in that stand, but a good set of V-blocks would work too!

78cj7 Atomicjoe, here is the link to a writeup for the xj ds conversion you can see the two types of shafts here. Plus it tells you how to shorten it yourself.

atomicjoe23 I'm gonna have to post a pic of mine to make sure that I got the right driveshaft. . .it was an earlier YJ, but it definitely has a double cardan driveshaft. . .let you guys with the experience help me out. . .

. . .this is my first major Jeep mod (and first major off-road project period. . .at least to a pre-existing vehicle!!!)

78cj7 No all of them didn't the early ones had regular drive shafts and then they went to double cardan shafts. You have to watch which Double cardan shaft you get some dont have the standard bolted end IIRC and are less desirable to use with an sye.

whitebuffalo im running a XJ front shaft. get it shortened and balanced an your good to go. shouldnt need an adaptor u joint unless you're running one ton axle or something. it'll have 1310 joints like you already have.

atomicjoe23 OK. . .I did some really quick digging and I think I'm OK. . .

. . .I didn't necessarily end up with the ideal year, but it will work. . .may have to get a hybrid U-joint, but I won't know until I get started on the SOA conversion

OK. . .first off I will apologize right off the bat because I didn't do a search on this first, I didn't have a clue what to type into the search box to get what the info I wanted. . .soooo if you already know that this has been answered and you just wanna post a link up to help me out that's great. . .on to the question. . .

I plan on doing a SOA on my '94 YJ and I heard that you can use the front driveshaft from a Cherokee instead of buying a new CV driveshaft. . .all you need to do is take the measurements and take it to your local driveshaft shop and get it shortened. . .hopefully this is true as I did buy an front XJ driveshaft today from the salvage yard. . .might have jumped the gun a little there. . .don't think so, but it's possible.

So I'm relatively new to off-roading so this is a basic question. . .what if anything should I do to the XJ driveshaft to upgrade it. . .I know that I can replace the U-joints, but I don't know what is in there to start with and I don't know much about the different series of U-joints. . .gonna try to read up on that, but I'm looking for some quick education. . .
