lee indy im leaning toward selling my silverado and picking up a tacoma or a tundra. get a tj on the cheap. might have to spend another year here but i do love my toys. wife okayed new wheels so i guess ill have her sell my pickup. anyone want a 2000 silverado in great condition v8 routinely gets 22 on the highway 4x4 and babied its whole life.

Madpoodle 010 F150's rock. We were hot on them until we got a wild hair and bought the JK instead F350 in the driveway (mine) made the decision a bit easier..

Badfish i love my tundra its an 04 with the 4.7 i wish i could have the 07/08 with the 5.7 and a double cab. by cousin has one and he likes his too. my truck drives great it almost drives like a car it dosnt have tha wondery, unconnected feel i get with most trucks. and how can you beat having a rear window that rolls all the way down. a new 6.0 would be a sweet option to but its always nice having a new car or at least one thats new to you

lee indy well that brings up a good question. how do you like your tundra. im looking at an 07/08 with the 5.7 double cab and the trd offroad pack. my truck is due for retirement or refurbishment. ive put 150 thousand hard miles on her and she still runs good but not great and needs a motor. i was gonna have my dad get her rebuilt before i get back but its the baby v8 and not really powerful. or i can get the tundra and keep looking for a tj or i can get a 6.0 droped in my truck with a new tranny and get a tj now. desecions .....

there you go now you are thinking. i have a tundra and would never get rid of it mainly cause i need a truck for towing and haulling but i need a jeep too so much fun its the best of both worlds. keep the truck and find the jeep you can afford and make it yours put the money you were gonna spend on the rubi and the extra 2 doors in a tj and it will be unstopable.

1BLKJP From a wheeling standpoint the 4k is a bargain for the equipment you get.

lee indy t case isnt a real issue. most wheeling ill do will be in 4 hi. ive used 4 lo like 3-4 times in my wheeling career and that was pulling something alot bigger than me out of a whole

i'm thinking with regearing, air lockers front and rear compressors and so on, and a 4:1 t case is gonna cost more than 3500, definately will with labor, and most of that is not diy work.

BeerMonkeY if your buying used look around at forums there a lot of good deals now. you cant get 4.10's unless you get a rubi, it used to be if you go tthe tow package you go t4.10 but they changed it.

lee indy quick search found me that it would cost me about 3500 to make an x into a rubiclone. little less if i get one with 4.10 gears already. anyone know what package gave the x or the shara this gearing?

lee indy ive read some more about them. im not gonna even look anymore. i liked them up until i found out the rear passenger door windows dont rool down. anyone with a retriever needs a window for the dog.

i was sold on a 2dr rubi until the wife dropped the i want kids bomb........ im panicing. guess i probably shouldnt get another moto cycle either.

jpdocdave don't even waste your time with an fj. i saw pics of one cracking a frame on mild trails. they are not built like a jeep.

4Jeepn I trail guide for Jeep Jamboree, have been doing that for 10 year or so. I have seen the 4 doors on the trail.. and they do fine. Yes they might need to take a different line than a 2dr or give it a bit more gas... but they do fine in stock form, even better with a lift and bigger tires. One that stands out was a red rubi 4dr in TN at Coal Creek.. I was amazed how well it did, never had an issue the whole weekend.

lee indy you guys have made some great points. 21k is alot of money but it shouldnt be a problem when i finally get back maybe it will drop another k or two. im looking at the fj curiser too but i think im going jeep. wife wants kids and i have 2 retrivers. ill have to find a 4 door. ive owned a tj and 5 cherokees over the years and ill admit i hated the 4door when it came out. how much does the xtra wheel base actually hurt you off road. i run mostly old logging roads and stuff you find mostly in the rockie mountains. so not much mud and a few rivers to cross. i loved my 2 dr but if i get rid of my truck for a jeep it needs to carry everything.

jpdocdave there is some truth to the statement if you're gonna upgrade for off road.

BUT, the only way a rubicon is not worth buying because you are gonna replace everything is if you are gonna go with 1 ton axles, 38" and bigger tires, and v8's and so on. the rubi is ready for 2" to 4" of lift and 35" tires and outwheel most jeeps on the trail right there, with basically no worry of anything, and going anywhere it wants.

no other factory jeep is the same. i hate new products, but they got the rubi right.

jk'n ^^ I say lets get back to the wheeling part. The drive train is set up pretty nice right out of the box. Yes, long after you buy it and you recover from the purchase financially, you may be tweaking this and that. But it is nice having a worthy machine right out of the box. Pure fun if you like the trail. I had the Sahara Unlimited with tow package (lower gears) and Chrysler bought it back. I now have the Rubi Unlimited and wouldn't go back for a lot of tea in China. Lets face it; all the tea could purchase several Rubicons!

Ursine It depends on how much you are going to wheel in it. The stuff in the Rubicon is fine if you're just gonna tool around on trails and such. Let's compare it to factory stereo systems... Sure you can opt for the best stock equipment offered, but if you actually give a rip about your sound system, you're just gonna replace it anyways.

Same for the stuff on the Rubicon, if you're gonna replace it, why bother with buying it in the first place?

jpdocdave if you wanna wheel its no question. if you don't wanna wheel don't waste the money.

my favorite quote from a long time wheeler, new rubi owner was something like this "i feel like i'm cheating with this thing"

h2otoo Well, I would say that if the Rubi is set up the way you want, and you can swing it money wise, yes. If not, buy a platform to build on what/when you can afford to add to it. Like Johnny Cash's Caddy, "one piece at a time". Mind you, this is coming from an "X" owner. But, it is the same question (kinda) I faced when I went with the "S" package. I could have bought a base for less money and add everything I wanted in time (and $$). Personally I figured it was better to got the "S" and have what I wanted (for now) from day one. Just my 2 cents worth.

is the rubicon worth the extra cash. ive found a 2door for 21k and a 4dr rubi for 22k

but i can get an x for 17k if i hunt and 18.5k easy. is the price diffrence worth it.
im gonna run 35s and want a minimum of a rear locker. i like the 4.10 gears the beefier t case and factory lockers but can i upgrade threw the aftermarket cheaper. and will the factory axles hold the 35s? should i try to find a sahara with 4.10 gears and a d44 rear? does the electro sway bar work well or is manuals a good alternative? i like the idea of having a factory machine with everything i want but im not sure if its worth another 4k. any thoughts?
