I HATE Wisteria
It's so invasive and hard to kill.
you will have the roots sending up new shoots for years to come. Just know that so you can stay on top of them . . . . two years after pulling mine out I am still getting shoots. THey are easy to control by pulling and they are getting smaller and fewer in number, so I am winning.
For a replacement, how about this:
I replaced mine with grapes. But I wouldn't recommend that over a deck. Birds like grapes, birds eat grapes, birds crap grapes. And they don't have much of a flower, which you want.
I was looking for a place to plant grapes for jelly so out went the wisteria.
I grow Hyacinth Bean on my arbor. It grows FAST in hot weather of 80+. Easily covers my arbor in a season. But it is not a perennial anywhere in the us except S. Florida. Frost kills it right off.

We have a trellis and a deck that we had grown wisteria on. It got out of hand and became a maintenance nightmare so we are getting rid of it. Already cut it off the trellis and its coming off the deck soon. I liked that the wisteria grew over the top of the deck for shade, (I built it with boards across to the house), so I will just add more boards for shade.
What kind of not to aggressive yet attractive flowering vine would be good to replace it? I'm thinking clematis, climbing roses, passion flower, trumpet vine, that kind of thing. Must be a perrenial and not too much maintenance. Any suggestions from experience with any of these or similar plants?
