Jeep did mine
I run the same tires as you mentioned. For under $200, Jeep upgraded my spare tire carrier without going to a new bumper. I have taken it all over off road, especially down washboard roads, and I have had no problem with my hinges.

Anyway, if you're just looking to get by...spare wise...check this out. I ran it for a year, on-road, and took the spare off when I wheeled. No problems...again, the key is keeping the tire tight against the tailgate.

That's the main thing...going off-road. That's what will trash your welds in the tailgate. A loose tire, banging around. In fact, if you keep a tire––even one that's overweight––snugged up to the tailgate, you should have no problems.

As far as weight, 305 is on t he cusp, IMO. Keep it snugged up against the stops (see above), and you should be fine, unless you're gonna wheel a lot. In which case, I'd recommend an aftermarket tire carrier...either a bumper/carrier combo, or something like the TF HD Tire Carrier.

305 70 17's and tire carrier
I already received my rugged ridge wheels (17x9), today I ordered the BFG Mud Terrains in a 305 70 17 which will go on after TF leveling kit is installed. My question is will I be fine with the stock tire carrier on the trunk as far as fitment and weight go? Any pics with this setup would be great! Thanks.
