I converted my previous (stolen) '97 TJ from its OE 5-speed manual to the 32RH and my current '04 has the 42RLE so I have owned both. I'd MUCH rather have my old 32RH back but to be honest, my 42RLE hasn't given me any problems other than its STUPID-STEEP .69 Overdrive gear ratio that causes the engine to lug unless your axles are geared extra-low to compensate.
For reliability, quality, and being nearly bulletproof unless it gets water inside, the 32RH has a superb reputation. So if I had a choice, I'd go 32RH. But if it works out you get the 42RLE, it should be fine providing you understand the need to gear your axles much lower than usual to compensate for its too-steep .69 Overdrive gear ratio.
So would I buy that 2002 with its 32RH? Absolutely!!!

With the tranny out;
remove the torque converter
remove the pump housing cover
weld the vent hole shut
drill a new vent hole in the top of the case
attach a fitting and hose to the new vent hole

|jeepwayoflife||The 32RH 3 speed is a pretty bulletproof transmission with proper cooling and protecting from water (don't go deeper than the bottom of the the body tub or so)|

02 puts you in the 32RH 3spd. There might he slightly better milage with the 5
4 spd due to its overdrive. But from what I have heard the 32RH is the more reliable trans. Its only weak point is the breather hole which sits on top and is prone to water flooding and contamination.

what one is better? is there even a diffrince?
looking at this jeep
2002 Jeep Wrangler
and as far as the apex goes all that is better seats and a few stickers on hood right?
both would be changed regardless if i do get it
