Even if you don't need rock rails for their intended purpose you can always use the excuse that they could/maybe protect you better in the event of a side impact.

Barmanvarn Personal opinion, I hated my stock steps/boards.

They were nothing but "mud shelves"

I say get some black tube style. Or better, rock sliders.

JeeperJake comment from 08JK Sahara:

Mine came with the OEM running board....while it 'looks ok' it IS plastic and worthless as anything other than:

1) actually DOES keep the crap off the sides & fenders really well;
2) has limited use preventing bozos parking too close from ramming their door into your Jeep;

3) worthless as any kind of 'rock rail' or 'slider'
4) worthless as a step as they are awkward position for a step up OR down;
5) actually are 'too wide' for comfort in stepping over them to get in while being perfectly positioned to get your left pant leg muddy in the process of sitting down while dragging your leg in;

I was going to take mine off at purchase but found the benefits of 1 & 2 enough to postpone that. Were I doing more 'off road' I'd certainly pick some decent rock rail for protection.

While the power steps are clever, without having a lift I don't really need OR want one.

So having driven my JK 40,000 miles WITH the running board, I certainly would never pay a nickle to buy one.

michiganadam Definitely get rock rails. Running boards may break when offroading, but rock rails will actually protect the jeep offroad. They also protect you from morons opening their doors into you.

The rubi rails wouldn't be bad either, but not as strong as aftermarket.

LoveJiuJitsu In Georgia? I'm about to pull off my 3 day old Rubi rails and put them up for sale (JKU).

kbwwolf You're in GA, so you can get away with chrome, I suppose. But I'm with Dixiedog...uhg.

Also, his point about step vs rock rail is valid. I've got rock rails, and don't think I've actually put a foot on em to get into my Jeep. If you're looking for something to help you, or a significant other, get into the Jeep, maybe check out something like the MORE Hide-A-Step.

Otherwise, a rock slider, or rock rail, is the way to go. Especially if you plan on wheeling. Add some friction tape if you wanna use em for a step...

Black

Get you some Rock Guards instead. I personally don't like chrome anything as well and don't like the running boards. My Jeep is lifted and I just use the steering wheel to pull me up and the passenger uses the handle on the glove box. The 2 back passengers use a $20 grab handle that I put on the roll bar.

DIXIEDOG I don't think chrome anything looks right on a Jeep so I'd say black. The nicest steps I've seen are the power steps that deploy when you open your door. That said in stock form are you sure you want steps? I find on a low vehicle like a Wrangler it's more awkward to step over them than just getting in for me.

Running Boards

2013 wrangler sport next project. Want to add running boards. Like the boards better than tubes but afraid they collect dirt. Black or chrome? Will either scratch up badly? What ya'lls take? This place is great for a rookie owner.
