I am a new Jeep owner as of last April. I am looking for some trails around the Jenison/Grand Rapids area and some people to show me the ropes.

spieg Early and late in the season its not uncommon for there to be less than 20 vehicles on the dunes total, even on the weekends. There are still plenty of days every season where they dont bother using vouchers because there arent enough people there to worry about it. My friends and I typically avoid memorial day weekend, labor day weekend, and the weekends on either side of 4th of July. Sometimes its fun to go on those weekends just to watch people doing stupid stuff though, too.

beemerfan At Silver Lake, I'm pretty sure the rules/enforcement are there to keep people from killing themselves and others. It's still fun if you play by the rules.

As for the crowds, you can avoid them by avoiding busy summer holidays and weekends. I was there twice this year. First time was in early August and we took a couple extra days to avoid the weekend. Came and went on the dunes as I pleased all day Thursday and Friday, no problems. Good sized crowd but never too much to find a good parking spot on the beach or to watch the sunset from the top of a hill.

Second time was over Columbus Day weekend and there wasn't many people there at all. Saturday had a decent showing but by Sunday afternoon, looked like there might have been only a dozen full sized vehicles out there and a handful of ATVs. Not bad at all if you can avoid the big crowded times.

It's just a day trip from the Grand Rapids area so if I lived by you guys, I'd be out there all the time.

mcgee10 This thread when it started was looking good. For those of you that have never been to silver lake take a good look at the picture on there information page it really looks like that. They have sucked the fun out of that, everyone needs to try it at least once but it's a zoo. Way to many rules and tickets if you get to crazy or even think crazy.
I run old fire roads and trails just the word fire roads not really roads at all and most 4x4 are never going to make it but now our jeep are great.

beemerfan Anybody here interested in a trip to Silver Lake this weekend? Or maybe just some two-tracks around Whitehall? PM me if serious. Thanks.

Nope. I don't. I don't ever head that far north but it would be fun to try to find it. I use Polaris atv app to mark my trail that I take.

Some but there's mainly some real muddy areas and a couple swampy areas and some sand pits.

as for places to go, check out Kids in the Mud off road park down towards Kalamazoo. with in an hour drive and has enough to keep busy for the day.
let me know if you wanna head down. im always up for a ride.
also there are some forest roads out in the N. Muskegon, twin lakes, area that are good for a ride every now and again. not much in the way of challange, but good to get out of the house.

Just thought this was worth bumping to the top
