i've owned carbon fiber lips and other accessories and let me tell you its not cheap and its not made to be beaten on .

True CF is amazingly strong and amazingly light and is usually manufactured with a pre-preg autoclave process. The CF pieces on our Exige are feather light and extremely strong. The front splitter made for Lotus by these guys, weighs less than 7 pounds and will take a tremendous beating.
The problem with CF is that, if actually made correctly, it is extremely expensive. In applications like a Wrangler hard top, it just doesn't make any financial sense - you're probably looking at $7,500 - $10,000 and it might save 50-60 pounds. If you want to save that kind of weight, leave the spare tire and jack at home (probably 100 pounds), switch to a Li-On battery (~40 pounds), take off the doors (maybe 200 pounds on a JKU), take out the backseat (30 pounds), ditch the roll bar padding (~10 pounds), take out the carpet (~10 pounds), find some lightweight wheels (maybe 15 pounds per tire with the bonus of being unsprung weight), etc. My point is that if you want to save weight, there are lots of easy and cheap ways to do it.

|monkeychow||I'm with 2012Cosmos, I think it would look cool in the right application. But you said you don't have a lot of money. Just as a comparison Quadratec has a stock replacement steel hood for $350. RK Sport has a carbon hood for $1000. Got your calculator handy??|

|JK-linux||A nice thought, but I'm not sure the weight savings (even if you made it weigh 1oz) would be worth it over the factory top. The factory top, even on a 4-door Unlimited, weighs no more than an adult male. It is only tough to move/remove because it is bulky. Making it super lightweight won't make removing it without a hoist a one person job. Saving ~150lbs won't net you great fuel savings either. I personally like the look of CF, but I wouldn't pay money for a hardtop in CF - rather spend several thousand dollars on factory 1/2 doors.|

Might be a waste of time to you and to all the guys on here who boast of slinging rock and throwing mud, but actually DD their Jeeps 98.9% of the time. But, to each his own. We all like Jeep Wranglers, just different styles and accessories.
This will be a hit with celebs, athletes, and companies (like Rockstar Energy - who has a black Jeep with CF hood, CF fenders, etc) that want to have a show vehicle....or just a vehicle that's different. I actually think a granite or anvil wrangler with a CF hood, CF grill, and CF hardtop would look freaking sweet.

Interesting concept and it would no doubt work but the cost would be ridiculous. Also CF is not as bad as it used to be as far as flexing goes and can flex in multiple directions without fear of breaking.
I have friends with CF mountain bikes that see a ton of abuse and no issues and my CF road bike is going strong with 3k plus miles of use.
I would think that you could use aluminum and make a lightweight top that is still strong. The main reason bikes are moving towards the CF over Al is that aluminum while lightweight is really stiff while CF is a little lighter but way more compliant.

|Kennyksu||I agree with working man. CF is for road rigs, I'g be really afraid of flexing it, chipping it, etc. It would look really cool, but then again so would 3M tape.|

|WorkingMan||Not sure why anyone would want a carbon fiber top. Carbon fiber doesn't handle sunlight very well. It's light, sure, but so is stock top. It only has strength in one direction. Flex it and the carbon strands break real easy. I would think the disadvantages would outweigh any advanatages. Oh, and it is expensive. So you might save 10lbs (and I doubt that). I'm pretty sure if there were some real benefits someone would make them.|

OEM hard top on a 2 door only weighs about 90 pounds not counting the freedom panels, another 30 or so there... not that big a deal...
And no, a 2 door top will not fit a 4 door.

There is not one on the market. Yes it would be very expensive as theres no mass production.
Light weight? How do you know itll actually be lighter if there is not one on the market. Youll need quite a few layers of carbon fiber to support the windows. Jeeps are heavy. Jeeps will always be heavy.

carbon fiber hardtop,need opinion
been searching around for a high quality real carbon fiber hardtop recently,not the 3M sticker(looks badly and cheap,i hate that way).
what u guys thinking abt it:
1,its worth or not? very expensive cost?
2,would like its light weight i though compare with OEM top.and carbonfiber looks coolllllll really.
3,1/2/3 piece,which one is better?
4,im not a rich guy,wanna buy one with my cousin so we can put the carbon hardtop onto both cars(my jeep jk is a 2door,his 4door)sometimes.wonder its fit or not?
look forward to ur suggestion.
