|RevCo666||Gonna make an appointment with the jeep doctor tomorrow and see what they say I'm in between being either rear main seal or the leak is coming valve gasket cover. I'm actually hoping its the cover being my issue.|

|JGreen06TJ||He mentioned black oil dripping. Transmission fluid should be red. Can recently changed transmission fluid get dirty enough to turn black? It takes my motor oil quite a long time to get dirty enough to be brown.|

Might be having a similar problem with my rear main seal leaking. Noticed a few drip spots, crawled under to confirm. Replacing the seal shouldn't be a big job since Jerry mentioned the transmission needs not be removed?
Sub'd for more info...

|skyhawkap||Thanks for the follow up...the thing that got me thinking about the trans. Is that I replaced the fluid because I didn't know if the PO had ever done it and it was very low but I guess that could have just been from neglect.|

|skyhawkap||Is it possibe for the trans. to leak in the front where it meets the engine (where the rear main on the engine is)? If so, how much would a job like that cost to have someone fix?|

|skyhawkap||Is the reverse switch on a 5 speed a black cylinder on drivers side mid-transmission? I have a little.oil around it and want to replace the gasket before I change fluids.|

A common source for a hard-to-find leak is the engine's rear main seal. My previous '97 TJ developed a leak there.
I doubt your leak is coming from the top of the transmission, I would not use Locktite on those particular bolts.

|skyhawkap||Should/could I use locktight on them?|

|skyhawkap||I cleaned and let dry...still could not tell exactly were it was coming from so I started top down until I started feeling oil. What I found were four loose (I could turn them with my fingers) bolts at the top just under where the stick shift goes up into the cab. Would this cause a leak? Is it common for them to come loose?|

|skyhawkap||Thanks...my plan of action is to degrease and clean everything Monday and maybe I'll be able to find the source.|

|XDR||Drain plug, fill plug, reverse switch, and vent cap are possibilities.. Need to look around to see exactly where it is coming from.|

|Jeepfixer1||Need to find exactly where it's coming from!|

Took my jeep first time really off road and half way thru the trail had black oil dipping off the back of the trans. Mount. I can see some oil on the side of the trans. Just before where it flairs out before the transfer case. Any ideas where it would be coming from and how hard of a fix? It's am I6 5 speed.
