Fuel Pump more than likely. thats what mine was, i think this is a dif problem. but mine constantly sputtered so i would say drop the tank and change the fuel pump. Nice Name BTW

zombiechief Mine does that sputter all the time now. It started kinda like yours but now is a constant. Not throwing any codes at all.

Sorry but I do not think any of these are your problem but it was worth a shot. Check your PCM to see if its loose or looks like its been drowned. It's behind the washer fluid reservoir.

AllMudd Turn the key three times from off to accessory. On the third Tim leave it in the accessory and watch the check engine light. Count the flashes.

:Flash Flash Flash: Pause :Flash Flash Flash: this would be code 33. Do this and let us know what you get.

I Appreciate the reply, that would make sense. do you have any idea what sensor it could be?

No mechanic in my area has a machine that can read codes from my jeep not sure if its to old or what...

jokerchief462 If it was the fuel pump connectors it would be constant you say it only happens after start up 1-3 minutes and then it is OK.

So we have established this happens before the engine reaches operating temps and you are running MPFI 2.5L

So it is a cold condition and the ECU usually adjusts the fuel air mixture rich while the engine is cold.

So you may have a snensor that is going bad or gone bad. That is the best I got hopefully someone else will chime in help you troubleshoot this down to a component.

I answered because it has been all night with no reply. I will look up some stuff tonight when I get home.

Help with sputtering problem

background of my jeep: 1994 jeep YJ with the 2.5 4cyl engine, but the engine, transmission, and fuel system was swapped in from a 1992 jeep wrangler.

around December 2012 i was having a problem with my jeep, it would sputter like it was being starved for gas, it would jerk like it was not getting any power, and i could not accelerate. i changed the fuel filter, oil, oil filter, i sea foamed it, and changed the filter again. still did it. so i changed the spark plugs. it was fine for about two weeks, then started doing it again. so i decided to drop the tank and change the fuel pump, which i was told was going out. this was 2-3 months ago. after i did that it has been running absolutely fine, with no sputtering issues to speak of what so ever. that is, until just 2 days ago, when it began doing it again. its different now though, it will do it for the first 1-3 minutes im driving, and then its pretty much fine, with only a few exceptions. I'm stumped.

an x-factor may be when we where installing the fuel pump the connectors did not fit properly and we used some connectors i had on hand. at this point in time im wondering if it is possible that they where not corrosion resistant and have already corroded to the point where i am getting a poor connection causing the fuel pump to not work properly? this is the only thing i can think of at this point in time. any help/ recomendations would be awesome.
