|TLATEOTW||sometimes those seals are not bad enough to leak oil from the diff, but when water can still go in, i crossed a river yesterday , the water was high as about 3/4 of my 32 inch tires, i got watter in my diff althoughy seals don't leak, I'm gonna order outer tube seals very soon|

|Ole4Cyli||This happened to me recently. Just pop off the diff cover and clean it all out the best you can. Don't worry about replacing the seals yet. Just put new cheap fluid in, and in a couple hundred miles change it again to flush it all out just to be safe. If you still leak after a week or two after you change your fluid the first time, then you probably have bad seals.|

|Texas2070||Mine breather is by the radiator. Lucky I've only got water in the diffs and transfer case. I just got done breaking open the t case and got all the water out. To much work for one day|

|NYJETS||I have a manual.. My front breather was in the front left wheel well. The rear was in the right rear well. The tranny breather is at the fire wall in the engine bay. I relocated the front up into the engine bay next to the abs unit and the rear up into the right rear tail light space. It gave me 8 inches of more water clearance...|

|Jerry Bransford||How could you have gone deeper than the front axle's breather tube opening unless you didn't have the factory remote vent tube connected to the axle housing? The front & rear axle remote breather tubes vent at about the level of the top of the radiator.|

And to the OP, you should do a fluid check in your t-case and trans as well because the breathers for those are far below the height of the front and rear diffs.
And just for reference, this is a diagram of a jeep with the AX-5 trans and np231 t-case. So the diff and t-case locations will be the same for all non-Rubicon TJ's, trans will differ however.

|NYJETS||If you are going through water you may want to extend those breathers. Thanks to Rooster 76 here I did it myself out of some fuel line, hose menders and some worm screws from my local auto parts store. Cost me $22 and about an hour of labor. I am by no means a Jeep mod expert but it was really easy. Now my lowest breather is the transfer case at 37".|

|Rubicon06Va||Use Brake Cleaner or WD-40 to propel water from diff. I wouldn't remove bolts from ring/pinion.|

Water in my axle
The other day I was in the creek and got submerged below my front breather on my axle. Now there's water in it. I took the diff cove off to drain the oil but I want to put some paper towels in it to make sure I clean all the water out.
If I unscrew the 4 bolts that hold the ring and diff in can I just screw them back in when finished with out any problems? I'm just a little scared operating in there because I know there's alot of measurements and stuff and I don't want to do any harm.
