I agree with you totally. A happy wife is a happy life. Lone Pine, Bishop, Mammoth area are all great places to explore. Bodie ghost town also. Actually all the way up to Bridgeport. I have an injured puppy, or we would be on the road now. He blew out his acl "knee" and has been home from surgery for four days. He won't be ready to travel for about a month, and by then the weather might not be conducive to good camping.
Next time you go and need company, give me a pm. We are way north, but we can come down to the Bishop area.

It also depends on how far out you go.

The problem is that many campsites are not convenient to set up in when the vehicle is right behind the tent. It also isn't really designed to be detached/reattached to the back of the vehicle after it is tent staked to the ground since the Jeep has to be within about a 1 inch cubed box for the thing to line up correctly.

If you go out really far then you also have to move all your gear (water) out of the back of the Jeep to sleep inside.

If you wife likes a cabin then maybe an enclosed offroad trailer or RV type setup is more in line with what she wants?

It's a bunch more cash then a sleeping bag and a bucket, but it's better to spend the cash then put strain on your life.

chrlswltrs I've read some of this thread, not all and it appears to be more focused on camping trailer, etc but I am wondering who has input for a different type of Jeep camping.

I haven't had my JKUR long and I've read a twin air mattress is a good fit for the back with the seats down. Experience or advice? Pump recommendations? I saw a couple beds specifically sold to fit this application but they are 4-5x as much as a regular air mattress.

Anyone used a "Jeep tent"? Something similar to this: http://www.allthingsjeep.com/jeep-8400-sportz-tent.html ? Recommendations here also?

Trying to find a compromise for camping with the wife. She doesn't really like camping, I do. A tarp and SOL Bivvy and I'm good, a cabin and she is good...

unusedusername And after a picture of a RV towing a Jeep, here is a picture of a Jeep towing a RV along a 3/10 trail (basketball sized rocks, one switchback).

We bring our basecamp with us. We don't get indoor showers though, so there is that.

This setup is also back on page 4 from last year when we first got it.

JK Coaster Here are some shots that capture the joy of having the Jeep as a toad to the RV. We just spent four days overlanding west of Death Valley near Lone Pine, CA. Each night we returned to the RV "base camp". Over four days and 200 off pavement miles we did not see another vehicle on the trail.

Some of our friends think we are insane. I think they really are not getting it. Camping and Jeeping is the best ever!!!!

mooney201 We have friends that he pulls a trailer behind their motor home and she drives their car to their camping spot.
Along these lines, I could pull our 5th wheel, while the wife drives the Jeep.
This way, she has all the comforts, while I can explore with the Jeep.

DaCrazyRN This one has gone nicely over the mountains, service, forest roads and in the canyons without problems...behind my F150! Now with the Jeep I am selling it and gonna build a Jeep capable trailer. It has served me well though!

Knockabout rirrgang your right but this was a quick trip to NC and the maiden voyage with the new JKU, and I hadn't been told by the lady we would be bringing back a few hundred pounds of apples for her friend, and I used what I had--not the greatest idea I admit. However I'm installing a lift next month and I only wanted to spend those $ once on a receiver setup. After lift and tires we remeasure and get it right.

rirrgang You really need to get the right height ball on that hitch. A set of air bags on the JK wouldn't hurt either.

Knockabout here's our "squared off" teardrop--gives an extra shelf inside and in the back kitchen, a huge benefit. I know it looks low in the tongue but the back is loaded with bags of apples and I haven't installed the lift yet. 14" clearance does well of FS and BLM roads. The AC is really nice if you can only make Moab in August! Great in Florida.

mrachal I have a 1999 Aliner Classic ( sorry no picture handy) I have pulled it with my 82 Scrambler, 05 LJ so I don't think it will be no problem for my new JKURX.
I haven't been on their website lately but they had off road / expedition model. Try dannyscampers.com . Aliner has several sizes and flor plans, even a small bathroom.

Aussie Jeepster Thought I'd share some pics from downunder on a recent trip about 6 hours north of home in the Flinders Ranges.
The trailer is an ex Australian Army Engineers Trailer complete with lunette and towed by the JK with a Pintle Hook attached.
I had a local supplier adapt an existing camper top to fit the trailer and it worked out just great.
Tows really well up to 60mph and follows the Jeep really well. The trailer runs Land Rover rims and 7.50x16 Steeltreks, from the Army and has plenty of space inside under the camper top for whatever I want to carry.
This trip started very wet and slippery and ended on the last day, heading home, at 106F, when I got a flat on the Jeep.

Thanks. I haven't had an issue towing that camper with the TJ or JK. Like I said I get a little wobble at certain speeds with the JK but I just need the stabilizer bar on the tongue.

Nice pop up. Looks like an 18 footer. Can't believe the tj could handle that

BlueHawaiiSurfer When I used my TJ, no pics with it behind my JK sorry, I never had any issues. 6cyl. My JK will tend to wobble a bit at certain speeds but never an issue towing the weight. My trailer is decent sized for a pop up but I have no idea what it weighs.
