Not too hard. PNW trails, not too many huge rocks here in Wa. But, I'm probably on borrowed time. I have the locker, just saving for some shafts.

I have the ax15. I kinda wanted to get a already set up, locked and new axle. I will have the money to do so this summer.

jeepwayoflife If you still have time on the Dana 35, look around for a Dana 44 for sale. I spent several months looking until I found out from a 2001 tj for $350 . I put in new bearings, sanded, and painted it, and it looks and works like a brand new axle.

For the dana 30, go with 27 spline chromoly shafts.

TJDave I paid less for a Rubi D44 with 35 spline chromos, ARB locker, and 4.88's.
But, it was well used. I have had no problems with it though, and it's been in my Heep for almost 3 years. That's not a bad deal for new, IMO, and Northridge is great to deal with if you have any problems with it.

1BLKJP 4.88's on 35" tires is a fine combination to run on a daily driver. Thousands are doing this setup everyday.

A fully built and bolt in 44 for your rear axle is never a bad way to go. In all reality there aren't many cheaper options after you get down to it and you are going to know that when you get it all of the mounts and brackets will line up perfectly.

Full Spool Go 30 spine on the d30 with the axles and locker. But stay 27 on the outer halves because 30 spline unit bearings have very few manufacturers. I have only seen US Alloy that makes a 30 spline unit bearing for a d30.

5spdftw Some guys will probably hop in here pretty soon and tell you to get an 8.8. While that's a fine idea, IMO the D44 is a much simpler swap if you don't want to fab anything. If you can find one in relatively good condition off of a TJ it will bolt right in.

jeepstertj cromoly shafts for the d30 should do the work i have tons of friends running 35´s and only have cromoly.

i think you can get a cheaper axle for less money but in my opinion a brand new axle is way better than anything else. so go for it!

A couple axle questions!

hey guys, I am wanting to replace my d35 with a d44! I have seen a NEW d44 on Northridge 4x4 for about $2500 depending how you set it up. The reason I am wanting to do this swap is because my pinion bearing in d35 is starting to go out. And this will be the excuse to replace it . thoughts on getting the d44 this way?? any input will be helpful!

Second question. I want to move up to 35s! what do I have to do to my d30 to run 35s locked reliably? And when I get 4.88s how small will my pinion shaft be? Is this even possible to run reliably?
